It gives me hope that all mankind can get together behind the idea of fried dough.

And I always knew these as zeppole, and I never met anyone who could resist them. Nice find, Espoo2.

And somewhere, a cop is giggling uncontrollably. You say donut, I say koeksisters, you say donut, I say beignet (not just France, New Orleans too).

This is pretty cool!

They left out a complete category of things like onion rings and popcorn shrimp. These often seem to be mainly fried dough with a little bit of onion or shrimp added for flavor.

It is hard to find info about specific products, but I did turn up Tampa Maid Gourmet Popcorn Shrimp:
Lighter coating at approximately 42%
I wonder what the figures are for non-gourmet shrimp with a heaver coating.

MonkeySaltedNuts - 'onion rings..These often seem to be mainly fried dough with a little bit of onion'

This is often the case, though I have to agree with UK Trading Standards:
'The term ‘Onion Rings’ (which implies a product made from natural onion rings) cannot be used to describe a product made from chopped onion and potato.'

Link to Blackpool Council website, where they obviously take their onion rings seriously. Only applies to restuarants and take-aways.

'Failure to comply with these requirements is a criminal offence. The maximum penalty on conviction is a fine of £5,000, or £20,000 for certain offences of misleading consumers.'

A fitting punishment for sub-standard onion ring peddlers! ˆ..˜

The onion rings I like are made from a ring cut from a large onion, dipped in batter and fried. Preferably chip shop batter and beef dripping. Scrum-diddly-umcious!
