GeoURL 2.0 (beta) launched today... We've talked about GeoURL before, but it's been so long, and the service was offline (sadly) for much of that time. Of course, the blogosphere is much, much bigger than it was two years ago... I wonder what syntheses we'll see? [via Urban Cartography]

I've been doing some geolocation work recently that's similar to this, although I use the ARIN database rather than user-entered data most of the time: Animations of a friend's webserver logfile Static images of a variety of logs Animations of users of my community site Do I only link to myself? Sorry. But if anyone wants to send me a log file or two I'll gladly make up an animation for you... (Matt, I'm happy to share my databases with you, which contain IP, Zip, Postal Code, and City/Country --> Lat/Lon data)

This was a cool service that I was sad to see the (temporary) end of. It is great to see it back. Is this an appropriate place to give the lat/long in user pages hobby horse another shove? No? I thought not. *shrugs*

...when I finally change from zip codes to ICBM... I know I'm old and out of date, but to me, ICBM stands for Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile. I can understand some three-letter acronyms with multiple meanings (IRA, ERA, etc.), but four-letters? Or does this mean we MeFites are da bomb?

Seemed the last implementation was overrun with Deviant Art links. (Was that just me? No mention of DA on the previous thread.) I do hope that sort of watering down is avoided. Nothing against DA, but its prevalence in GeoURL results seems counterproductive.

Jimbob-- geourl.info is doing the same thing, but it appears to be an independent effort. geourl.org was handed off by Joshua Schachter to the new maintainer with the old database intact (I'm still findable through geourl.org; I'm not in geourl.info).

I don't know, GeoURL always struck me as a good way to allow the "goons" to find me faster. So I always set it to where I want to live, not where I do live.

how do enter the location / coordinates i want to look at? all i can see is this map that i can try to click but its zoomed out too far so i cant get close...
