Mac people can do this with MacOSaiX, which has the killer feature of being able to suck pictures from Google Images searches.

Am i missing something here, or does this software really NOT use flickr?

Based on all the flickr spelling posts lately, it should be a matter of hours before someone uses the flickr api and tags as the image db for one of these tools. And that, would make this even cooler.

I don't mean to bash the post, but is anyone else tiring of these things? The fact that they are totally automated now and anyone can do them takes a lot of the power out of the images. I prefer to see something hand-crafted, like the Stranger cover of Michael Jackson.

That would be a mosaic of Michael made entirely from breakfast cereal. Sorry there isn't a bigger version. The current cover is also good, incidentally.

I agree with BlackLeotardFront that this schtick is getting slightly old, but find this a little interesting. I've always thought the medium of tiny-photograph-mosaics to have much more potential than it was used for; enough of the "picture of a horse made with tiny pictures of horses" crap. The picture of a dog made with Windows icons, while completely inane and absurd, is moving in the right direction. For example, there could be a picture of happy children made up of thousands of stills from horror movies, or pictures of flowers made up of images of dead bodies.

I think the Stranger cover is by Jason Mecier. See also Mariah Carey made out of makeup and the Martha Stewart vegetable platter. I think my favorite, though, is the portrait of Jon Benet Ramsey made entirely out of children's shoes, which, like many of his works, has to be seen to be believed.
