Mitch Hedberg is said to have died of an apparent heroin overdose (Howard Stern confirms). Mitch was a fantastic comedian, and it's sad to think that he won't get the attention he deserved because he shares a death day with someone else. some favs....Totally kicking myself for not going to see him last year. I bought a doughnut and they gave me a receipt for the doughnut...I don't need a receipt for the doughnut - I'll just give you money and you give me the doughnut, end of transaction. We don't need to bring ink and paper into this. I can't imagine a scenario in which I would need to prove that I bought a doughnut...Some skeptical friend, don’t even act like I didn't buy a doughnut, I've got the documentation right here...oh wait it's back home in the file...under "D", for doughnut. I think Pringles' initial intention was to make tennis balls. But on the day that the rubber was supposed to show up, a big truckload of potatoes arrived. But Pringles is a laid-back company. They said "Fuck it. Cut 'em up." I wrote a letter to my dad - I wrote, "I really enjoy being here," but I accidentally wrote rarely instead of really. But I still wanted to use it so I crossed it out and wrote, "I rarely drive steamboats, dad - there's a lot of shit you don't know about me. Quit trying to act like I'm a steamboat operator." This letter took a harsh turn right away... This shirt is dry clean only. Which means...it's dirty. I hope the next time I move I get a real easy phone number. Something like, 222-2222. I would say sweet. People would say, "Mitch, how do I get a hold of you?" I would say, "Press 2 for a while, and when I answer, you will know that you have pressed 2 enough I wrote a script for a guy, and he said he liked it but he thought that I need to rewrite it. I said, "Fuck that, I'll just make a copy In England Smoky the Bear is not the forest fire prevention representative. They have Smacky the Frog. It's just like a bear, but it's a frog. I think it's a better system, I think we should adopt it. Because bears can be mean, but frogs are always cool. Never has there been a frog hopping toward me, and I thought 'man, I'd better play dead. Here comes that frog...' You never say here comes that frog in a nervous manner. It's always optimistic. Hey here comes that frog, al-right. Maybe he'll come near me so I can pet him, and stick him in a mayonnaise jar, with a stick and a leaf, to recreate what he's used to. And I'm pretty sure I'd have to punch some holes in the lid, because he's damn sure used to air. Then I can observe him, and he won't be doing much in his 16 ounce world. When you go to a restaurant on the weekends and it's busy they start a waiting list. They start calling out names, they say "Dufresne, party of two. Dufresne, party of two." And if no one answers they'll say their name again. "Dufresne, party of two, Dufresne, party of two." But then if no one answers they'll just go right on to the next name. "Bush, party of three." Yeah, what happened to the Dufresnes? No one seems to give a shit. Who can eat at a time like this - people are missing. You fuckers are selfish....the Dufresnes are in someone's trunk right now, with duct tape over their mouths. And they're hungry. That's a double whammy. Bush, search party of three, you can eat when you find the Dufranes. I hate turtle necks. I have such a weak neck. Plus if you wear a turtle neck it's like being strangled by a really weak guy... all day. And if you wear a turtle neck and a back pack it's like a weak midget trying to bring you down.

That really sucks. At least he's gone to that great Doubletree in the sky. When we saw him in Boston last time he was around, he was in pretty bad shape. His classic Mitch stuff was all off and he went into several extended asides about how much he liked drugs. Still glad I got the chance to see him twice.

I just got a huge chill down my neck. I saw Robert Creeley read two weeks ago at the university Festival of the Book, and he died. I bought two Mitch Hedberg CDs this weekend on recommendation and just encoded them this morning so I could listen to them at work. And he OD'd. People have said I had all the charm of the grim reaper, but this is eerie.

The Howard Stern news piece is from the 17th. I think it's a typo on the Stern link. The date (the 17th) is for the story about when Mitch sat in on the news during the Stern show two weeks ago.

Sad. Saw him live in Seattle at Giggles, probably one of the worst clubs in one of the worst cities for standup. I think he knew that, because he just read from a notebook the whole night. Later, I found out he did that in several places. It was strange. But I find it especially sad to hear he was a junkie. Entertainers need to stay away from drugs - they become much more interesting that way.

Some discussion on the possibilty of this being a hoax? The most official report comes out of Howard Stern--indeed, likely the originating source of this story, and so close to April Fool's--and a quick news search garners no results. I'll keep searching, though, but no real "official" reports as of yet.

That's what's so weird about it. Nothing in the Baltimore police blotter, I can't get any confirmation from the Baltimore police (this is all assuming he died in Baltimore of course) and nothing on any of the news sites - only comedy central, Howard Stern and the booking agent, all of whom could be in on the joke. Frankly, until someone who doesn't even know who the hell Mitch Hedberg is chimes in with a confirmation, I just can't buy it.

I was at the Funny Bone in Richmond, VA last Friday night (3/25/05) to see Mitch. While buying my tickets, the guy at the ticket counter said Mitch may not make it to the show. I asked if anybody had given a reason why, and the guy smacked the inside of his elbow with his finger and smirked, "he's sick." I thought it was a weird joke at the time, but now I'm depressed.

Yeah, I'll miss his jokes.. but it was more than that.. he just seemed really genuinely likeable... like if I met him after a show, he'd be the coolest guy on earth.. not in a "Better than you" sort of way... but in a "cool guy to hang out with, and probably always just as funny as he is on stage" sort of way... I'm in Phoenix and never heard about that performance, but I do remember that it came months after a highly-hyped concert that he ended up cancelling. Not to derail, either, but seeing a reference as obscure as "Silky Slim" managed to cheer me up a bit...

. I saw Mitch last November, and I must say his show was actually pretty bad. He was fucked up on SOMETHING (I thought he was just drunk, but now I'm wondering if it wasn't something else) and couldn't get his jokes straight. At one point during the show he actually laid down on stage and pretended to sleep. It was really depressing. Not as depressing as this, though. Damn. :(

two great things about mitch hedberg were that his jokes get funnier the more you hear them. And that you can make anyone who knows him laugh by saying pretty much any mundane thing in that...mitch hedberg way of talking.

i do tv subtitles for a living. i fell in love with mitch's comedy when he came on an episode of "late night with conan o'brien" i was translating and told this joke: i'd like to hang a map of the world in my house, and stick pins in all the places i traveled to, but first i'd have to travel to the top two corners of the map, so it won't fall down.

Hedberg [...] died early Wednesday morning in a New Jersey hotel room. He was 37. A medical examiner hasn't issued findings, but Hedberg's family was told he suffered a heart attack. His wife was with him.

He was my favorite comedian, and my wifes, for years. The last time I saw him, he was different, not his self. He did the whole reading from a notebook thing. Where before it was one joke into the other, there was lots of mumbling and silence. We thought maybe he was just trying out new material, and I could listen to him read the phone book and be happy, but now it all makes sense. I wonder if he'll miss sesame seeds after all. I know he'll be missed.

Unbelievable. Absolutely unbelievable. I had the great good fortune to see him a couple of years ago, which, if the review Silky Slim linked to is accurate, may be when he was at the top of his game. If he overdosed, it's a pointless goddamn waste. He had a gift. He was one of the most creative and entertaining stand-ups I've ever seen. And he threw it away.

. I was truly saddened to hear this news today. I'm really glad that I had the chance to see Mitch perform 4 or 5 times in San Francisco (and once in San Jose). I'm only sorry I never carried out my plan to make "Mitch's Bitches" t-shirts for my friend and myself. But you know, maybe I'll make those shirts after all.... And please feel free to steal the idea, I like the idea of a troupe of Mitch's Bitches running amok.

This sucks. I never know how to feel when famous people die. I didn't know how to feel about this until I read this thread. Now, remembering all these jokes, I am both laughing and crying. To think he'll never write another joke, never tell another joke, never smirk like that after telling a joke. . . makes the world seem a bit more empty. I saw him a couple month ago here on campus. He was late and seemed fucked up and everyone knew there were drugs being used. Being college students of course we didn't think anything of it. It was still a good show. Just goes to show you how dangerous that stuff can be, and how fragile your life is. Reminds me to take better care of my friends.

slapshot57- a belated thank you for the out takes. I saw his take on doughnuts on television years ago, liked him a lot, but didn't catch the name. Sorry it took this to get me properly in the loop. On the other hand, I'm glad he was recognized enough that his death made a real stir.
