Google wants your porn Google co-founder Larry Page has announced that the company wants the public to send in its homemade videos - and he doesn't mind how mucky they are. "There might be an adult section, or something like that. I don't think that is going to be a big issue,"

In a recent survey 23 per cent of Britons cited pornography as their primary reason for getting broadband internet, far outweighing any other factor.

Wow, Britons are surprisingly honest.

The privacy conscious among you may wonder how this giant database - which knows your search queries, your email, and the people you know through social network - could have managed to stay out of your bedroom for so long. Now you have it.

lol. Now if only Google could store my medical records for quick access in an emergency...

they're getting annoying now...monopolist maybe even. Why should they have everything online? Who keeps ownership? Are they still "doing no evil"?

I've heard it called "doing the nasty" - maybe if Google's going to start archiving our l'il home videos we should start calling it "doing the evil"...?

How are they monopolist? They've done nothing to prevent other companies from competing with them; in fact, other companies do compete with them, in some cases quite successfully.

Why should they have everything online?

Because they are an online services company. Isn't it logical that they should want to expand the services that they offer?

Who keeps ownership?

It's not really a factor. Google just wants test clips so that they can try out their indexing software. When the system goes online, it will merely link to content, just like their web page search.

Are they still "doing no evil"?

Yes. Indexing video for easy retrieval is not generally thought of as a sign of villainy.

Sorry if my answer is a little snippy, but I'm getting tired of the "Google is successful, so they must be doing something wrong" meme.

This is a pretty desperate FPP.

Just to make sure someone said it.

Because damn, it is.
As Quiet pointed out, at least find a better source than this; for instance the one linked at the bottom of the page and from which this site copied the entire article.

I think there's a huge difference between success arising from smart decisions and a superior product, and success arising from the ability to illegally "cut off [the competition's] air supply".

Google is still A-OK in my book.

Success does not equal monopolist.

I am not aware of any anti-competitive behavior engaged in by google. So it isn't fair to call them monopolists. They are just successful. And just as some short-sighted people thought yahoo was going to control the internet a few years back, so too will google eventually be displaced at the epicenter of the 'net. There is too much competition and innovation takes place too fast. The existence of a monopoly on the internet is, as a practical matter, impossible.

Google is stilll A-OK in my book too, although I am getting a little tired of hearing about two or three fabulous new Google products every damn week. At this point, I don't pay much attention to their announcements anymore.... there's just too damn many of 'em for my fragile little mind to keep track of.

I don't necessarily agree with it but at least one person thinks Google has jumped the shark.
Who knows? Personally I think that this is a claim that can only be made after the fact.

(incidentally: jump the shark, is a Happy Days reference. i'm sure many of you know this but had to throw it out there)

Okay, Im'a have to go with "Spoogle", by the_bone.

It just doesn't get any better than that, though I would be open to hearing what spicynuts has to say.

(egeways, "jump the shark" jumped the shark around here a looooong time ago.)

taz, explaining that "jumped the shark" jumped the shark to people who think we're all clueless jumped the shark a long time ago.

Also, Google remains the appropriate name, given that the first syllable is 'goo'.
