The dark and unsettling photography of Swedish photographer Fredrik Ödman who explores "the meeting point between logic, imagination and madness." Don't miss his nature portfolios. via The Cartoonist)

Very cool. I sometimes find work like this is trying a bit too hard, but this is definitely good stuff. I especially like his portraits.

I love this work. My enjoyment is only marred by my inability to find a print collection. I [heart] the web, but art like this demands the kind of scrutiny and quality reproduction only print can provide (for now).

Superb. It's amazing how he can put that feeling of darkness into the nature shots. And I love the misty coastline with the single bird.

unsettling ?

Joel-Peter Witkin is darker, imo, but both tend to bore after a few. I haven't read anything about Ödman's work, but I know enough about Witkin to know that he is a complex and (again, imo) troubled person. Ödman's work, to me, just appears to be the sort of highly creative jerking around that one can achieve digitally. Witkin's models, for the most part, are from nature.

I know that it takes all kinds to turn the earth, so folks that did Geiger and Witkin probably groove on Ödman too. By all means, knock yourselves out. No, really, I mean it.

I'll second that. "Other World" has Witkin so written all over it that I am a tiny bit surprised that he even bothered. Sincere flattery, I guess...?

Some of this reminds me of the imagry in the movie "The Cell". My guess is the filmmakers took some cues from this man's beautifully unsettling work.

Like biscotti, I definitely got a "trying to hard" vibe from most of the aggressively freaky pictures. They are well composed, of course, but with all the outfits, props, silly faces and over-the-top lighting effects they're almost more theater than photography.

But the nature pics more than made up for that. More of a subtle, delicious dissonance between the creepy and the beautiful, I thought.

No. Both took from, and added little to, the visions of original artists.
