There are a couple of Sonic Youth videos labelled as being from SNL - I think they're actually from the old show Night Music (hosted by David Sandborn and Jools Holland). I saw that in the late 80s/early 90s and it changed my life.

Bitimage: Close to the Edit was the first video I looked for. That was simply amazing, I was about 13 when I saw it and haven't seen it since. But I think about it. Lots. It would also be great with The Eurhythmics' equally weird I Love to Listen to Beethoven.

Just watched that "Like Spinning Plates" video. How'd they do that? It's like an extremely big version of that 360 light painting stuff I've seen posted here a few times. Amazing. Which reminds me, why is the only place I can see decent music videos in America in 2005 is a matchbook-sized window on the internet? I mean, whenever I travel to Europe or Asia, they have cool stuff on MTV. But here, I live within 2 miles of the FUCKING WORLD HEADQUARTERS OF MTV and I can't see a decent music video to save my life. (And don't start on that Fuse shit. Jesus, they suck.)

where? when? cool! It looks like it was at the PSV in Hulme - '82 or '83. I saw them do a better version in Hanley in '83 I think - they were smashed out of their heads, barely able to operate the new toys they'd bought. This was just after "Blue Monday" came out and just before "Power, Corruption and Lies". They came on, as usual, an hour late and laid waste to the audience. "Blue Monday" at the end - they walked off-stage and left the sequencers running as the lights came up. They were/are one of the best bands I have ever seen live - they could make music that you could dance to that made the place they were playing in feel like a cathedral.

Wow. First of all, it says that the DJ Shadow video they have there was directed by Wong Kar-Wai, which is totally nuts. He has a new movie out, which I've been meaning to see, but I never would have thought to pair him with Shadow. I can't wait to watch the video. Beyond all of the Chris Cunningham and Michel Gondry videos (download them if you don't have the dvds), they have one of my all time favorite videos: Rabbit in Your Headlights. The last 20-30 seconds has one of the most beautiful images ever put to film. Haunting.

Great stuff, moonbird. nickerbocker, we share a favorite Beck song. I can't wait to download that. And just to back up jonmc's seemingly reactionary comment a little - Close to the Edit was mentioned. I consider this song, in combination with Beat Box (Diversion One) to be one of the great meta-musical artworks of the late 20th century. I listened to those two innumerable times for years, blissfully unaware that there even was a video. When The Art of Noise came up in conversation with a friend, she practically retched and said, aren't they the ones that had that godawful video where the little girl's destroying a piano? Huh? I said. Maybe. She was dead-set against ever listening to any AON because she hated the vibe of that video. Finally I got a chance to see it, and although I like the video, its jerky inanity is completely antithetical to the musical vibe I had gotten from the audio. For my friend, it's too late to try to convey any of that, because the visual image is inextricable from the sounds. A cautionary tale, y'all.

360 light stuff, for trinarian. The Radiohead clip looks like an extreme version of it - they set up a Matrix-style bullet-time series of still cameras, open the shutters in a dark room, then paint with the lights, then set off a flash to get the room and the bodies on film, then animate the whole thing. So cool. Oh, and that Sigur Ros video you recommended? I still can't get it out of my head today.

A cautionary tale, y'all. Then again, I probably would have never heard of tAoN if it wasn't for that video. I think this was before MTV had even arrived in my town, so I probably saw it on HBO's Video Jukebox. It's amazing how much things have changed. We were so disconnected then. Now a kid wondering about a video could instantly find out everything about the band and a community of fans on the net. Meanwhile, I'm feeling connected. Thanks to MeFi I just got to see the 'Close to the Edit' video again for the first time in 20 years. Thanks moonbird!
