Thinly-veiled advertising. The ban-hammer of doom hovers over fujikyoko, we can only hope the end is swift and merciful.

Not only is it advertising, but advertising for what appears to be a completely useless product!

What? I can use headphones on my laptop? Cool!

Fungible: It's a surround sound USB card. Almost universally, laptops come with only stereo outputs. If you watch a DVD, for example, you get only left and right sound output. With a USB external audio card (like this), you can hook your laptop up to a surround sound speaker setup and get proper 5.1 or the like. You can also use surround sound headphones (slightly silly, but they do sound different than standard stereo).

Among different ways that it can be useful, the most obvious is a person who uses their laptop as their only computer. Go home, plug in your stereo's optical cable, and you can watch a movie on your computer in proper sound. Also very useful for video games (especially first person shooters, stealth games, etc.., where the source of the sound is important). Pull the plug out and take your laptop on the road. Without a USB audio card, all your movies and games would be in standard stereo.

Another use (though I doubt this product is of professional calibre enough to be useful) is for DTM producers who want to be able to play music in surround sound live.

So don't let the headphones throw you. The useful part is not "you can plug headphones in", it's "you can plug your laptop into a surround sound audio system".

That being said: this is not a new development. It's like posting about "the awesome invention known as a USB memory stick".
