Cute! Foxes are really neat.

Here's a site about urban foxes. It's based on someone's Master's degree research. With pictures, and information about human interaction with foxes, such as feeding them (don't!).

At the complex where my parents live there is a local fox family. Foxes are like cats and know that bird feeders make for easy pickings - not only birds but mice/voles that like the spilled seed and nest near by.

When I visit my parents I sometimes see mama fox making her rounds of bird feeders.

Perfect timing. I discovered there has been a fox hanging out in the neighbor's yard. I haven't seen it yet, just heard it. Though I didn't know it was a fox at first, I thought it was a dying animal and dragged The Husband out at 2 in the morning to either help it, or put it out of its misery.

When we couldn't find it but the noise continued the second night in a row (last night), I figured it had to be whatever animal's normal state. Thank god for the Internets, I looked up wav's of all the local fauna, and was very surprised to find it was a fox making that awful sound. It sounds to me like someone kicked a puppy though hubby thinks it sounds like a dying bird.

If it comes back tonight, we're breaking out the night vision to catch an actual glimpse of it. Not sure I'd trade living in the 'burbs for anything.

Btw, davemsc, I believe you can keep them as pets if you get them with a license for fur farming. Though, obviously, you don't need to actually use it for the fur.

It depends on where you live I guess, as to how you feel about foxes. As a child growing up in the UK I always wanted a fox as a pet too. Not any more. In Tasmania we are doing everything we can to eradicate foxes. If we don't the effect on our wildlife will be devastating.

Ah i've heard the same sound [insert]! We have foxes in the area and thought that they just finally got the local tabby cats, who were dying a slow painful painful death.

I'm more scared of them getting my dog at night though... I can't wait for the coy-otes to drive em out!

I'm more scared of them getting my dog at night though... I can't wait for the coy-otes to drive em out!

Heh, I hope this is in jest, coyotes are much more of a threat to dogs than foxes. Most foxes even leave cats alone unless they are, as you noted, weak. But the coyotes most likely won't drive the foxes out. We have coyotes too, and they seem to co-exist just fine. The foxes lay low when the coyotes are nearby.

The best protection of your pets, though is to not let them out alone unattended, especially after dark. I can't fault any animal for thinking a small domestic animal on a leash is an easy meal.
