I'm all in favor of men -- gay and straight -- holding hands in public. macho attitude is really about insecurity, in the end. I still kiss my dad on the forehead whenever I meet him, just like I do with my mom, and kiss them both goodbye that way. I don't really have a problem hugging my male friends in public either. Westerners are really stiff when it comes to such things -- bring the Russian-style how-you-doin' male-on-male kiss on is what I say. I seriously doubt that straight people are going to start having sexual thoughts about other males because of hand-holding or air-kissing. it's cool.

Is Saudi Arabia wearing the blue dress now? And however accepted such things may be outside Texas/the U.S., this is a truly bizarre image. Texas men just...don't. They don't do that in public. If they did, how would they know who the gays were so they could beat them up and legislate against them? My dad would have had a conniption if he'd been alive to see a Texan U.S. president holding hands with another man. I sincerely hope that many Bush-voters across the state are having sudden doubts about him. And hats off to anyone who uses an uber-conservative, Republican-lovin' rag like the Morning News to make the rest of the state question Bush's manhood. Whoever they are, they are my hero.

In other news this week, here in Connecticut, a place I don't usually have much praise for, our legislature voted to establish civil unions and the Republican (interim) governor signed the bill. It's not marriage, but it is some good news for a change.

They will be met at The Boatshed on the waterfront by a kapa haka group who will perform a waiata written especially for the couple. A party will follow where they can "whoop it up" in style. "I'm very excited. I expect it will be very emotional too and I know I'll cry," Mr Jolliff said yesterday. The couple plan to honeymoon in "Gay Paris".
