Just when you think you might have some slight grasp of the idiosyncracies of modern Eastern culture ... they put soup in toilets.

the most unappetizing idea in ages.

I'd like to go in there with a bag of pre-cooked veggies, rice, and a jar of duck sauce, and fill up the actual toilets, and then tape a "VIP" sign on the door.

I just wrote my brother to see if he'd heard of the place :-)

amberglow writes " the most unappetizing idea in ages."

It's in competition with this South Korean place for that title I'm sure...

I wouldn't go to this place. I heard the food was crap.

I'm sorry.

Eh, looks like a real shithole (if you'll excuse the pottymouth).

Okay, I'm done. Be sure to tip your waitress.

One word: coprophily

One tangent: from the people who brought to you : sony walkman, just-in-time production, yakuza and loyal obedience to an abstract corporate entity..what the hell did you expect ?

I don't want to trigger a shitstorm of controversy, but I'd say it's about time for a tubgirl reference.

I think people would get really pissed-off if you tried.

Oh, I dunno...maybe the capacity to distinguish between Taiwanese and Japanese?

I lived in Taibei for eight years. I never managed to see this restaurant (I think it may have opened in the year that I've been back in the US). I did see some pretty amazing stuff while I was there, though. One was a store called simply "Motherfucker". The Mandarin was a transliteration of the English. Another was a line of stationery called Bianbian Friend, "Bianbian" being something like "poop" or "doodoo" -- children's language for #2. The line had a cute little cartoon mascot shaped like a pile of poop. I keep kicking myself for not buying one of the Bianbian Friend photo albums when I had a chance. There were many, many more examples like that.

jiawen: What is sold at "Motherfucker"?
posted by mullacc at 11:18 PM on May 7, 2005

Clothes of the "for hip young people" variety. The choice of name was entirely conscious on their part. As someone said, the store has gotten more free publicity for its name than probably any other little store in Taiwan. I wish I could find a photo... My Google-fu is failing me.

I also frequently walked past another clothing store called Wanko. In this case, though, it was a true mistake. This was probably just poor transliteration, and should've been something like Wange.

Aha, found them: Motherfucker and Wanko. Be careful with that last link; it keeps crashing Firefox.

"Motherfucker" seems to be gone, or at least the sign in the alley they had was gone the last time I walked past there. Taipei's had the jail restaurant as well as the Hitler cafe, so this doesn't particularly surprise me. It's not enough to get me out to Banqiao, though.

Your site was the first one I checked for a pic of "Motherfucker", Poagao. I could've sworn I'd seen one there. I guess I get you and the Taipei Kid mixed up sometimes. :)

No, that was me. Don't know what happened to the picture, though.
