Artist's site. "For anyone who doesn't know this, "Crazy Frog" is what the market persist on calling my character The Annoying Thing. I personally hate that name and deeply regret I didn't put a stop to that early on."

You can see a higher quality 60Mb .mov on this site, under "projects".

OK, I'm putting a collection to buy that thing pants.
I'll put forth $1.27 ... Any helpers?

Doesn't this fog-like-thing shill for something on the web?
You'd think they could give it a clothing allowance to buy more than some goggles and a vest.

How does he steer that thing?
posted by Balisong at 10:46 PM on May 12, 2005

The Annoying Thing has been licensed by mobile phone companies worldwide as a ringtone, wallpaper and video download.

Anyone with access to German television can certainly confirm this. The damn video appears endlessly in commercials -- usually twice or three times within a few minutes. It's the most annoying thing.

I hate that god damn frog.
There are really no words to describe the number of times they show the thing on adverts here. And they're bad adverts, for a cynical overcosted product (ringtones) designed specifically to drain the pockets of stupid teenagers £1.50 at a time. I really do hate that god damn frog.
posted by seanyboy at 12:04 AM on May 13, 2005

I hate you so much for posting this. I work next to a TV that blares this out every 15 minutes for 9 hours a day. If I ever meet the man behind this I shall cancel the non-violence parts of my morals and kill him all slow and painful like.

THE FROG MUST DIE.
posted by longbaugh at 12:10 AM on May 13, 2005

You actually posted an ad for a ringtone??? For real??

Bad form.
posted by sourwookie at 12:11 AM on May 13, 2005

To be fair to the poster, I don't think he realised what the frog represents. However, given that the UK is beginning to wake up, expect a rash of vitriol and hatred spewing from the mouths of the British MeFites
posted by seanyboy at 12:27 AM on May 13, 2005

I find that song more overused and annoying than The Annoying Thing, but then I am not often subjected to ringtones. The Axel F theme, I used to be exposed to a lot and got sick of it.
posted by ZachsMind at 12:30 AM on May 13, 2005

Me: Wakes up.
checks: metafilter
spews: vitriol and hatred towards poster

I come to metafilter to *escape* from exploitative advertising aimed at separating gullible imbeciles from their money, not to watch it.

That said, I can see how anyone who hadn't been exposed to this irritating little fucker every time they turn on the tv, several times in every single commercial break might not be as incensed by this as those of us in the UK.

Squash the frog! Re-education camps for all who purchase the ringtone! Death to *all* who think that noise on their cellphone is somehow 'funny', 'cute' or a symbol of their creativity and individuality.

Unless you happen to be David Brent, in which case it's understandable.
posted by PeterMcDermott at 12:57 AM on May 13, 2005

Let us not forget Tweety or that stupid dragon one as well.

Point of fact - owning this ringtone (or variant) and using it means you are the spawn of satan. You should be skinned alive and have salt rubbed into your exposed flesh. I hate you.

Keep watching TRL, keep driving your £300 Nova SRi 1.2 with a £250 body kit and a £300 stereo you fucking anus.

/bad morning and really doesn't like the frog et al

I had no idea it was an advertisment and enjoyed it. Thanks.

The first time I saw it was on holiday in the Tjech republic. Happy as we were to, at times, be able to follow some of the languages on tv, sad we were about this fellow disrupting our yoy. Where's Bush when you need him?
Another thing:
I've been going through google a lot over this, but I vaguely remember an animation where some character (long time ago) Did a funny thing with pretending to be a car with all the enginenoise and gearshifting. I would like to see this evil frog exposed as the copycat it is. Anyone else seen the animation I think I saw? (true, there's not much to go on...)

I used to love Axel F. I listened to it over and over and over again in high school. Now I will always think of that annoying frog-like thing going "Bing bing bing".

I wonder if they've paid royalties to the two sources they ripped the entirety of the melody from.

I hate the frog. I hate the frog. I hate the frog.

Great animation, though.
posted by tomplus2 at 6:26 AM on May 13, 2005

Pretty_Generic, yeah they got a small sum of money in a one-shop buyout I distinclyr remember reading in some BCC article. It wasn't much if you know how often that stuff is plugged on UK and German telly (by any standard) and how often that song is sold as a ringtone. The swedish guy who makes the noise isn't a millionare by any stretch, he's still a regular starvin' student.
posted by dabitch at 6:37 AM on May 13, 2005

Oi, how did I manage that? I hope you can decipher that, and I meant BBC article.

Love to hate the fucking frog (most) Annoying Thing.
I will award points for good animation though.
posted by horseblind at 6:45 AM on May 13, 2005

That frog penis would never go over here in the US. So, I guess in this case (oversaturated marketing tool) that's a good thing.

"...whilst acknowledging it was surprising for genitalia to be shown on an animated frog the ASA found that there was no sexual or inappropriate references made about it."

&idWhat VBFG said. Except with more bile. I hate those damn ringtone adverts. This sums up what I feel about the ringtones advert (NSFW and NSF those who don't like the 'C Word')

Great post, ehintz, thank you! The awesome little frog dude is like the first thirty seconds of exposure to Jar Jar Binks; the initial good humor is rapidly replaced by a deep and bitterly vitriolic hatred. And yes, I downloaded and watched the 66.1MB QuickTime movie. Must... Stop... Watching... Frog....

nobody noted that the "deng deng" mumblings of the frog
come from the dengdeng.swf insane motor noises flash?
i wonder what the original author thinks of it now..
posted by zenzizi at 7:44 PM on May 13, 2005

So which came first? I saw dengdeng a long time ago and thought it was hilarious...someone emulating a Formula 1 v10 engine pretty damn well is funny in my book (through the first loop)...

So did the ad take that audio? Or is the dengdeng audio from the frog? I thought this was a very cool little video, never having seen this frog before.

For all of you UK folk that hate its frequent commercial appearance, all I can say is get yourself a DVR...I haven't seen a commercial in 4 years, nor do I plan on watching live TV ever again (unless its *really* important) ;¬)
posted by gren at 11:08 PM on May 13, 2005

Thanks vira, was looking for terms more than phonetics. At least you've put my minds at ease. Sad thing is that it's far from as funny as it was back then.
Damned frog!

Christ on a fucking bike, you've got to be kidding me. You people who are getting off on this - just you fucking wait until Crazy Frog and his hideous ringtone empire starts running the world, you'll be praying for the return of Punch the fucking Monkey.

Boycott Jamster, and indeed every other ring-tone-selling company while you're at it. This web site lets you convert music and pictures into a format suitable for your cellphone automatically, and will even assist in getting it onto your phone. And it's free.
posted by Mwongozi at 4:18 AM on May 14, 2005

the music is the most inspired part of this video, I think. Here's the site of the people who made it... the Bassbumpers.

Just my $.02, but if you were really annoyed by this, as I was, you wouldn't have noticed the pecker. I had to go back and experience it again, you fuckers, so I could see a frickin animated frog pecker.

As we used to say in junior high, get your mind out of the gutter!
