I just want to spread the immense joy of Winamp TV, which is a route to all kinds of Filipino servers playing all your favourite copyrighted television material commercial-free 24/7 but it's OK because I'm not linking to those servers directly no sir.

So, you just linked to winamp.com, which dosn't (as far as I can see) link to winampTV at all.

Um, fantastic.
posted by delmoi at 3:46 PM on May 26, 2005

Winamp TV is in the program "Winamp". You have to download the progam from winamp.com.

But what can I say, piracy is fun!

Is there a mac client for this service?

Apparently it is supported by VLC on the Mac. Here is a (slightly) more informative link on WinampTV, and here is a link about the NSV format that it uses.

Hasnt this been around a while now? I can remember at least a year ago - WinampTV having episodes of my favorite TV show (which has just recently returned from cancellation a few weeks ago).

Actually, I think this might work, in conjunction with the links under "SHOUTcast TV".

posted by squirrel at 4:06 PM on May 26, 2005

It depends on the channel, ranging from 600 to 64kb/s.

Alright, I am interested now... I have VCL downloaded, what next? Where are these servers?
posted by Livewire Confusion at 4:11 PM on May 26, 2005

They're the links under "SHOUTcast TV". But, they don't seem to display most of the program names on the website. Which is why this isn't very good for Mac users. Can anyone suggest a solution?

Caveat speculator: I used Winamp 5 for streaming video for a while until I realized that the ahem "least savory" channels were launching IE and spawning pop-ups. When one such launch initiated an uninvited installation, that was it for me.

Yeah, there's an option under Media Library -> Library Options to turn off web scripts.
posted by Pretty_Generic at 4:41 PM on May 26, 2005

This is very cool. I remember looking at it some time ago and not finding much but that seems to have changed.

I'm televisionless, not because of any high-horse ethical nonsense but simply because it is cost prohibitive where I live -- in a hole (no horizon) without cable available (four houses in twenty miles of road isn't much incentive for Time-Warner) and 80 miles from a broadcast station (see hole and need for 40 foot tower).

However, I like a few shows and download them via BT. Unfortunately, it is getting more and more difficult to find reliable trackers and even with a decent connection it's a pain in the ass waiting for 350 - 450M downloads. It's nice to be able to grab up a quick Simpsons, Seinfeld or Futurama fix.

Oh, it was ages ago. Whatever version was current last year. I'm not surprised to hear they've fixed it by now.

Get Kerio Firewall. Disallow Winamp from invoking any other program. Disallow your browser (and all other programs) from connecting directly to the internet, allowing only the browser to talk to a local prox (like Proxomitron)y. Allow the proxy unrestricted access to any address, but only to ports 80 and 443.

Next, I will teach Mac users where babies come from (neither Steve Jobs nor Al Gore are involved).

svci.net is a great resource for all things Winamp TV including a couple places you can find streams without winamp.
here's a little m3u playlist you can open in VLC with a couple of my fav streams, mine included (I'd put all 207 up but winamp doesn't like to do that). Check out Toastmasters if your feeling adventurous.
and a little hacker trick to watch a stream that says ICY Server Full, put winamp/vlc on repeat and just let it keep trying to open the stream, eventually you'll get through.
the ironic thing to me is winamp and their internet tv is pwn3d by aol

posted by Pretty_Generic at 6:37 PM on May 26, 2005

pacheco, type control-P, click on "media library" in General Preferences. You'll get a pop up screen with four folder options. Click the online media file and then put a check mark in each box. Below these boxes you'll see a "Specify Ratings" button by the Internet TV box. Click it and then put a check mark in each box that you see. Exit and refresh your media library. And that should do it.
