Pardon my self-link but I do doodles similar to those all the time... here's one I did that's colored by a friend (since I am unable to color to save my life).

Some of the more meticulous / obsessive ones could cross over from "Doodle" to "Art" at least if you take the perspective of AVAM
(American Visionary Art Museum) Yes of the really good doodles: "works arise from an innate personal vision that revels foremost in the creative act itself." In short, visionary art begins by listening to the inner voices of the soul, and often may not even be thought of as 'art' by its creator.
The museum brings recognition to the works of of "self taught artists" / outsider artists , or sometimes, - although they would put it this way - nut cases.

What a great thread. I haven't doodled in ages, but I used to love it. Y'all have just inspired me. posted by mediareport at 9:04 PM on June 3, 2005
So I attend these really boring lab meetings, and am always doodling to keep myself awake, and somehow or the other i feel the doodle ends up as a weird reflection of whatever the hell we were supposed to be discussing, and so I started putting them up on my wall, and then I thought to myself, why not online, and i said-Nah, too much of a pain, and besides, who puts up doodles online after all, and then I see this, so maybe I will, after all, if only the damn scanner starts working again.
[this is good], i love the comments as well . Thanks. posted by dhruva at 12:28 AM on June 4, 2005

I came across these doodles by a 15-year-old Russian girl some time ago. She must be 27 by now, can't help but wonder what ever happened to her... posted by Lush at 10:04 AM on June 25, 2005
