So, what would it take for this to be the work of a local sneaky multigenerational group?
1. Some sort of sleeping gas.
2. An engine to blow the gas around.
3. A ladder.
4. Possibly a large stuffed bat thing. posted by catachresoid at 7:46 PM on June 5, 2005
Gremlins are Catholic?
Not necessarily, Elpoca, but they've certainly been known to fraternize with certain high-ranking priests. posted by Dr. Wu at 7:47 PM on June 5, 2005
I wonder how such a belief could come into being...?

I remember (from a comparative nonwestern religions course thirty some years ago) that a native NZ tribe (don't remember if it was Maori or not) had a very simple system of belief in an afterlife. When a person died, his/her spirit would have to run from the village to a nearby hilltop, where (after)life would be all bliss and reunions with family/clan/ancestors. The complication was that they were chased by a large, black, sodomizing dog. If the person had lived a sinless life, they would make it to the hilltop unscathed. If they had sinned, the dog would catch them and sodomize them while all those already in "heaven" would watch and laugh. Afterward, they would join family/clan/ancestors in bliss and afterlife. The only "sin" deemed "mortal" or worthy of the dog-reaming was incest, broadly defined as sex within the clan.
I have thought about starting a branch of this religion here in the states...perhaps in Zanzibar, they don't have large black dogs, but scary bats. posted by beelzbubba at 9:33 PM on June 5, 2005
It's just space aliens coming to do a little testing on mankind. If you believe the supermarket tabloids this happens every day. posted by caddis at 4:28 AM on June 6, 2005
The story sounds like a textbook example of "Sleep Paralysis". I have had similar experiences happen to me, except without the sodomy. The inability to move or talk, the clicking or buzzing noises, the sense of an evil presence, it's all there. posted by BigLankyBastard at 6:45 AM on June 6, 2005
Hilarity.
