In the Japanese & American versions, we would use distraction techniques to alter the bones in a race to the death.

Russian Germans?

I seem to remember something about Catherine the Great encouraging German immigration in the 18th century. And there were ethnic german enclaves all over eastern europe. I think the Nazis even used that fact as superficial justification for the earlier invasions (Sudetanland, for example).
