Great, great idea... could've been a bit more comprehensive, though. I keep wondering when someone will annotate the Streets' A Grand Don't Come For Free to make it a little easier for me to follow.

"You want to make a Yaz record..."

I love that song. I'm forwarding this to some fellow record dorks. Thanks, QM.

I agree with cadastral...my first impression is that the last link isn't that deeply annotated....rather than a 30-second clip of what Niagra sounds like (for instance), i'd be more interested in a full list of "every Niagra record on German import," or the full story behind "the first Suicide practices in a loft in New York City" in 1974...and nothing at all for "every seminal Detroit techno hit - 1985, '86, '87?" The hipster stories behind the references seem interesting to my non-hipster-looking-in ass...but I suppose that's what google is for.

(as an aside, I caught LCD in Boston last night and it was an utterly fantasssssstic show...completely amazing)

I like that song "Beat Connection"-- it makes me laugh, has a nice bass part & definitely describes certain too-cool-for-school club nights I've been to in SF...

Nobody's gettin any play!
It's the saddest night out in the U S A!

cadastral, are there specific questions you have about lyrics on that streets album? or just a general sense that it's hard to follow?

Oh, the interconnectedness of it just baffles me. Like, what's the deal with the jacket (the one left at simone's house)? The characters drift in and out of the plotline so frequently, I can't tell if it's awesome and highly nuanced/stylized storytelling, or sloppy storytelling. I suspect that some sort of character bio and plot summary would add to my appreciation of it.

is that the jacket he gets all mad about, because he thinks it's evidence she's cheating on him? i gotta go back and listen to the album again. i give him credit & assume it's nuanced storytelling, but who knows?

The end of What is he Thinking? sums it up:

He really needs to know how his jacket
Miraculously appeared round my gaff, here
And the man that left it's been shagging
Mike's girl behind Mike's back and thing
This shit's all got a bit out of hand
There's no options I'm all down on plans
I'm jus' gonna have to split it now, man
Tell Mike the person that bought the coat round
Was...................Dan

Sloppy. Juan Atkins, the first link I clicked, is not Juan Atkins.

Thank god my knowledge of obscure post-Iggy wannabes hasn't been lost to the fog of age. Niagara still is.

She was the lead singer for detroit protopunks Destroy All Monsters with Cary Loren (now the owner of BookBeat book store, a truly awesome bookstore in Royal Oak, MI), Jim Shaw and Mike Kelley. Kelley has gone on to quite an in/famous art career, as has Shaw, though to a lesser extent.

Niagara is "currently" the lead vocalist for Dark Carnival which includes former Stooge(s) in the lineup, though I don't think they've performed anywhere in years. They do put on good shows, though, with many Detroit pure rock&roll artistes joining in (the Bootsy X, Mutants, Elvis Hitler variety, not the Bob Seger, Ted Nugent types).

She also is a cheap hack rip-off artist of Lichtenstein-like pop art. Last time I saw her, she was still trying to wedge into some pathetic leopard skin and spandex outfit 3 or 4 sizes too small for her.

The sad part of this? I still like her. Her escort/manager/husband "The Colonel" and I used to play ping pong together & she gave me a boot of an Iggy/Stooges Raw Power/Metallic KO cassette, which she hand crafted the box for.
