And, if this doesn't work, these guys will find a severed thumb and visit the local Wendy's (speaking of "eating")..

/gotta go, time for lunch, chili sounds good!

I've never clicked a link so fast! But it turns out this has nothing to do with Pop Will Eat Itself.

beating "don't be evil" by being "evil"? Evil will always triumph because good is dumb? I hope not..

...At least until GWEI's Adsense account is canceled.

Evil will always triumph because good is dumb?

Good will always triumph because evil will automatically rebrand as part of the winning process.

We dig Optimus Prime and not Galvetron,
We dig "The Leader of the Pack" and the "Do-Run-Run",
Spinderella and Bruce Lee, "The Bad and the Ugly",
"V for Vendetta" and "Into the Groovy".
(Can U dig it?)

This crapness popped over my RSS feeds this morning. After viewing the site, I could only think:

"Let's drive ad revenue into our pockets with a semi-clever intarweb meme attempt!"

By establishing this model we deconstruct the new global advertisment mechanisms by rendering them into a surreal click-based economic models. We inject a social virus ("let's share their shares") into their commercial body hidden under a polite and friendly graphic surface.

This verbal filth stinks like it was shat out of the Web Economy Bullshit Generator, except replace "Web Economy" with "'Subversive' 'Anti-Establishment' 'Artistic' 'Hipster' Douchebag" - much more accurate.

Bah. Insert univeral wanking gesture.

For this insipid scheme to work, doesn't there have to be a compelling reason to visit their website?
posted by esoterica at 11:47 AM on June 13, 2005

I don't really understand it because I didn't see any ads on the pages I visited there, and I don't have any blocking software or anything. Did I miss something?

It's also, and I may be misunderstand some principle of economics here, not really anything different from how money usually works. They've maybe highlighted it by using the money Google pays them to buy Google stock, but how is that different from an employee using her paycheck to buy Google stock; or a farmer using her's to buy milk? Things like this make me feel dumb because they make me feel as if I'm missing something since they seem so entirely unremarkable to me. Someone please tell me if I'm wrong here.

OH MY GOD Watch in awe as I use Microsoft Outlook to e-mail my broker to buy Microsoft shares!

I'll bet in the old days when people called their broker and told him to buy shares of AT&T they felt really bad ass too.

I think the interesting thing is how this is an exhibit. Particularly "interesting" was the room filled with overhead projectors.

Good luck with that, GWEI.

They currently own approximately one-third of a share. Good luck with that, indeed.

I can' t see any AdSense ads. Given that several items on the site massively violate the AdSense TOS, I'm wondering if Google has simply cut them off. Not only do they overtly list the actual dollar amounts and clicks generated, but there's even a robot to go and click on the ads to generate impressions. Was this all working properly before it was posted, thousand writers?
posted by dhartung at 7:56 PM on June 13, 2005

I thought the ads must have been pulled, because the code for the ads is in the source of the page linked, but I couldn't find any sign of the ads themselves.

This project's greatest contribution is its clear demonstration of Google Adsense's invulnerability to quick-and-dirty terms violation.
