The big problem with posting things like this to MeFi, I think, is that they're so rarely designed to scale up to the traffic. Still really neat though. Which is weird, because all it's doing is placing a clunky meatspace step in the display path of a chatroom.

There's a distribution network tool available that helps prevent things from breaking down when they're posted on places like MeFi or Slashdot ("the slashdot effect") and get a ton of sudden traffic. It's the Coral: NYU distribution network just append .nyud.net:8090 to the URL when you post. Example: http://www.cnn.com.nyud.net:8090/

I would like to call shenanigans. I didn't actually try the gimmick itself (I'm back in Iowa on vacation, and we's got dial-up here), but the images posted so far look a little 'shopped to me. Look at those extreme right-hand letters and how they overlap the border of the screen. If I'm wrong, someone please correct me.

ArsncHeart The only photoshoping involved was the crop of the screenshot and dumping it as a .jpg. If the site worked when you visited you'll have noticed that the screen of the monitor blurs quite a bit and the effect you're describing is probably related to that. My own experience with the site is that your text isn't submitted if you press enter, only if you hit the button, and then you have to wait a while before it accepts another submission, I managed to get three on there over a while, but only out of a dozen tries.
