What with the new movie and the whole Tom and Katie thing, it's no surprise that the world's gone War of the Worlds mad recently. Still, for my money, this Darkhorse comic, adapted from H.G. Well's original text is gonna be ace - there are twelves frames up at the moment and they're adding all the time, with the aim of completely some 120 pages of superbly drawn comic-novel in the not-too-distant... Enjoy.

Vague spoiler: From what I remember of the book, this is a big unanswered question. Nothing was known of the aliens' motivations, and communication was essentially impossible (although I don't think they tried very hard). Maybe they didn't like the way we looked, or something. IMHO, the mystery made the invasion even scarier and more realistic.

There's also the *other* new WotW movie, which is apparently a basically faithful adaptation set in Victorian Britain. The reviews on imdb are mostly "nice try, but this isn't very good." From the trailer, it looks like Spielberg used Independence Day as the original for his movie, not WotW.
