There are 7 words you can't say in kindergarden. Caution: contains foul language and political thought.

This bugs me in the same way that parents who swathe their kids in t-shirts with political statements bug me. Even if I agree with the sentiment, I'm creeped out by the desire to make children into messengers of an adult's worldview. Not classy.

I'm pretty sure you can't say "assmunch" either...But even if you classify that as a variant on "ass", we're still talking more than 7 words.

Ass
Bitch
Cock
Cunt
Dick
Fuck
Piss
Shit
Twat

Plus the bevy of racial slurs.

It's a reference to Carlin's seven dirty words, I think.

Glen thinks something should be done about this, no doubt.

Poor little kids. Look how sincerely and strongly they pine to learn the facts.

What maryh said. This is silly.

I remember sitting at the dinner table when I was all of 10 years old, arguing with my brothers while my mother was outside somewhere. My brother went to the bathroom and while he was gone, I taught my 3 year old neice to say 'Fuck off Allan'. We all cracked up when he returned and she did her party piece. But I wouldn't do it now - and she swears like a trooper at times I must admit.

Lame.

I get as hot under the collar about evolution being stripped from science curricula -- but I can just as easily imagine someone making a movie about how saying "Jesus" will get you kicked out of kindergarten.

Maybe we should all just get over ourselves.

Can someone explain this to me? Isn't every Kevin Costner film over two hours? Shouldn't we say Disney films since those usually clock in at about 80 minutes?

Oh, I don't think this was very funny, or insightful.

Stupid, stupid parent. This video may follow his kids for the next couple of decades. It makes them targets of potential wacko attention. What parent in his right mind would do this? One need not be a prude to think this guy needs a serious reality check. I hope his wife kicks his ass. And it's not even slightly funny. Frankly, I think it comes close to abuse. Or at least exploitation.

Kinda dull, I thought --- especially since Quicktime played without sound. And, yes, I did check that my computer was not set to 'mute'.

It may not have been funny, but

Frankly, I think it comes close to abuse.

is hyperbolic and silly. Consider the real physical and mental abuse that some children have to live with every day. Doesn't using the word "abuse" to refer to something as goofy as a father filming his kids reciting George Carlin's Seven Dirty Words trivialize the concept of what abuse really is? Or is it just me?
posted by ruddhist at 9:42 AM on July 17, 2005

Abuse? Oh give me a break...let me guess, you're one of those people who breastfeeds until they're leaving for prom, sleeps with their kids in a family bed until they get married, and thinks "crying it out" is also a form of child abuse.

Ruddhist - yes. Yes it does.

realcountrymusic, I agree with you. This little film seemed to be a repellent use of his kids and I think you're right, the film may well follow his kids around for decades. Putting obscenities into the mouths of his toddlers to get the point across that the word evolution may be treated as an obscenity by certain fanatic adults is grotesque.

i'm with "phil":

Fucking brilliant.

Good lord, NAUGHTY LANGUAGE. He is a great parent. Teaching your children that 'bad words' simply don't exist is something everyone needs to do.

Bad intentions? Yep. Bad actions? Sure. Bad words? That's just silly.

"Humbug" was considered profane 100 years ago.

Wacko Attention? Are you kidding? You think creationists are going to hunt down these children for their views? Or do you think any image of a child is potential pornography for a pedophile? Perhaps we should dress our children in burquas, you know because 1 person out of a thousand is a pedophile or something, and we can't be letting them get turned on.

You're wrong, you do need to be a prude. Those words don't actualy damage anyone.

It was okay funny, but Yo La Tengo's cover of "Nuclear War," where an entire chorus of children shout, "It's a MOTHER FUCKER! DON'T YOU KNOW! THEY HIT THAT BUTTON, YOUR ASS GOT TO GO!" is a much better use of cursin' kids.
I don't see how this is abuse at all. He made a dumb, kind of silly joke with his kids, and probably was able to explain to them that words alone are not bad.

OhPuhleeze, bite me. I am not "one of those people" -- especially since I am a male and cannot breastfeed. I don't even know what a "family bed" is, but it sounds weird. So, let me guess, you're one of those people who has to attack someone personally for saying something with which you disagree. Pot, meet kettle.

Children are not their parents' playthings. They are autonomous individuals and their parents ought to treat them as such. A child is in no position to consent to the posting of an image or a movie for the entire world to see of that child doing something that will be potentially embarrassing, humiliating, etc. later in her life. This parent used his kids to make a political point (with which I happen to agree, though I found this unispiring and a waste of bandwidth) at the expense of their dignity. It's gross when right wingers do it, and gross when liberals do it.

And delmoi, there are many kinds of abuse. To name this bull as abusive is not to minimize physical abuse. It never occurred to me to compare this to sexual exploitation -- that's your inference, and it's wrong. But yes, I do think it entirely possible that enraged creationists might spread this video clip around the net and harass this family. Any sane parent ought to know better than to invite lunatic attention focusing on his kids.

20 years from now one of those kids may be in college or applying for a job or even become a devout Christian and have this video clip surface and embarass her/him. Why should s/he have this bullcrap follow her/him around for the rest of her/his life?

So yes, I call it abuse. Humiliating your children in public is abuse. And all in the service of a very stupid piece of web trash.

You want to talk about a weird thread....

This is it, folks: ... but I can just as easily imagine someone making a movie about how saying "Jesus" will get you kicked out of kindergarten.

This is why it's not a very interesting piece. As a "singing to the chorus" exercise, I think it's kind of cute. But it's never gonna do anything to convince anybody who's not already convinced. It's a bit (and note, "a bit") like dumping offal on the capital steps to convince people to outlaw the beef industry.

As for abuse -- that people can get distracted by the fact that impressionable children were made to say "dirty words" (e.g., to use the Anglo-Saxon instead of the latinate for "maternal copulator") does tend to make the man's point, AFAICS.

Or Big Boi's son taking the mic in the middle of Speakerboxx. Hilarious, but creepy...

Yeah, the video sucked. Right idea, wrong execution. All those kids are missing are some of those crass Che kiddie t-shirts.

Yeah. I do think that. They bomb abortion clinics, don't they? They involve themselves in the personal lives of those whose views they oppose. They do it covertly. They do it overtly. They can be very vicious and cruel in the name of their gOD. They're in a cult, they can't help themselves to not do these things. And making your kids curse words that they have not yet learned in school or on the playground (pronunciation and syLABle inflection made this obvious) was bad ammo to give the other side. I found this video's existence spurious.

This bugs me in the same way that parents who swathe their kids in t-shirts with political statements bug me.

Since when is wanting your kids being taught a rational scientific theory based on mounds of evidence in public schools "political"? Real science is not ideology, it's not a belief system, it's not a debate. It's best-possible conclusions drawn from observable and reproducible results and is not sway to cultural, social and religious norms. Science is not political, only the ramifications of society knowing 'the truth' can be considered political and subject to debate.

Don't be fooled by the the talking heads, they degrade rational thought, call the evidence political just so the can debate it all over again. They can't defeat the scientific truth so they change the forum where sophists can play on their own field.

Maybe he is using his kids to make a 'political statement' but there are Intelligent Design "Scientists" who would use the entire education system to make their own. I found this a very nice video middle finger.

Actually, it does -- in Kansas, for example. And not just there. (Search for "teachers in Birmingham".)
