"Square America is a site dedicated to preserving and displaying vintage snapshots from the first 3/4s of the 20th Century. Not only do these photographs contain a wealth of primary source information on how life was lived they also constitute a shadow history of photography, one too often ignored by museums and art galleries." via posted by peacay (21 comments total)

Incredible, thanks. I collect vintage photographs so this will have me occupied for hours. posted by fire&wings at 2:46 PM on July 19, 2005
You get the billysumday stamp of approval, which may mean nothing to you, but to me, it means the site kicked my rear with its total awesomeness and mega raditude. posted by billysumday at 2:47 PM on July 19, 2005

Great website. Theses snapshots complement the posed photographs of Disfarmer who captured the lives and emotions of the people of rural America between 1939-1945. Both websites allow us a glimpse of the people and the times of our recent American past. posted by ericb at 3:10 PM on July 19, 2005 [1 favorite]
Wow. I've only just looked at the photo booth pages, and this is already the best thing I've seen in ages.
(Photo 3 on page one is such an amazingly haunting portrait.) posted by maryh at 3:14 PM on July 19, 2005

This is fascinating, and for some reason, sobering. Every life in this century is so much like every other...barring the occasional WTF... posted by Pliskie at 9:49 AM on July 20, 2005
