Music Hurts is a new online music magazine that looks to examine the impact of music on society and culture. The articles cover topics such as band logos, female drummers, baile funk, Old Dirty Bastard (RIP!), Heavy Metal and Rap around the globe, and Iggy Pop. Lots of great stuff here, that is if you can get past the arty flash layout. Via OneLouder.

Hm, on one hand, I hate the layout (takes a little while to figure it out, and it seems awfully light on textual content), but on the other hand, they had a bit on Brian Dewan (yaaaay!) and included a link to his new site, which is awesome. (But I'm an instrument geek.) So, thanks!

The spelling of various band names seem to change each time they're mentioned. Makes it kind of hard to find out more about said band.

Eyes Hurts.

But thanks Quartermass. It was worth the effort it took to flip through.

definitely worth the effort to wade through. I honestly liked the layout--especially the layered way of incorporating sound with image and text. Many people try, but few so successfully and unobtrusively pull it off.

I found the writing rather pedestrian and uninsightful. The "chicks with sticks" article was especially insulting to women and to women in bands.

No mention of Susie Ibarra? Evelyn Glennie? Layne Redmond?

The Flash layout is so beautiful! It's created a new novel navigation technique, much like you'd flip through a magazine in real life... if you had no hands. Some of the animation and the pop-up text on the ODB are pretty neat, but unlike splash pages in a magazine, throwing a single quote in the middle of the screen and making me click past it is more obnoxious than useful online. Traditional print layouts don't translate well when I'm trying to consume content without being interrupted with a hunt to find the right spot to click to read more.

That said, I'm at least somewhat interested in most of what they covered and am left wondering if these writers have worked elsewhere.

Meh. Who can bother? Grumble.

Q'mass, thanks for 'bothering' to seek out and share new and independent content on the web. The Drummer Girls article was cool, and their Manchester article made me go check out Autokat.

Nice find, even if the interface is sort of overdone and weird.
