Fungal remixes

Australian scientist Cameron Jones puts nanocrystals on the bottom of his CDs. And prints fractals on them. And grows bacteria, yeasts, and fungi on them. What's perhaps the most surprising about this is that when these CDs are actually played, they sound pretty cool. More details can be found here and here. [Last four links are MP3, MP3, PDF, and PDF, respectively.]

That's awesome. Similar to what Yasunao Tone was doing back in 1984 (and then Oval, more recently), but they were scratching, painting and sticky-taping rather than actually growing things. Wonderful. Apparently Radiohead used some strawberry yogurt coated CD sounds on Amnesiac, too, but you wouldn't know from listening to it. Well, maybe Cameron Jones can tell.

This is what happens when you put a CD into a Tesla coil. Very cool effects. (perhaps nsfw because of some other pics on the site)
