The secret behind George W Bush's appeal to the majority of Americans has been revealed at last (warning: embedded quicktime video); it's all the work of his professional speechalist.

Like the previous post, are funny videos found on the web really worthy of a FPP all by themselves?
posted by parallax7d at 8:02 AM on August 12, 2005

Yes.

are funny videos found on the web

What has that got to do with the thing jonson linked to?
posted by crunchland at 8:09 AM on August 12, 2005

this is a funny bit of video , but i'm with parallax on this not being a FFP. it should have been dropped into one of the many flame wars over bush IMHO.

Ouch! Crunchland, you didn't even find it a little funny? Man, maybe I need to get my funnymeter checked, cause this kinda triggered it...

On b3ta, this would be called a monumental glasscock.

No, no, I'm sure it's everybody else's funnymeter that's off.

2 words. "Andy Dick."

Alright, fair enough, I bow under the waves of "clearly not amusing". My apologies, good sirs & ladies.
posted by jonson at 8:16 AM on August 12, 2005

Oh, don't apologize, jonson, thanks for putting that up. That was from some special on Comedy Central a while back and I lost my recording of it. I love the odd funny video link on Metafilter. It's not like you were "LOLZ CHECK THIS VIDDEO OUT GUYS!"

Question: what is the deal with Andy Dick? This is the only funny thing I've ever seen him in. Everything else has been unfunny trying-to-hard not-on-his-wavelength uncomfortable silence. Is he some Hollywood cokehead-scene inside joke? Does he just have a really good agent? At one point he was everywhere. Is he some kind of hero to people? Did I miss some past stellar performance of his? Was he a Nixon speechwriter or something?
posted by redteam at 8:47 AM on August 12, 2005

The whole thing was worth it for me to learn about the term "glasscock" from Harry, which is pretty awesome, as well as the site (glassco.cx) that lists all current overplayed links.
posted by jonson at 8:47 AM on August 12, 2005

It would have been funny, but it's just depressing to actually realize such an illiterate dumbfuck is in command of the government and it doesn't even phase me anymore.
posted by docpops at 8:49 AM on August 12, 2005

Andy Dick Sucks. Has that guy ever been funny? Don't get me wrong, the subject matter could have been hysterically funny had someone else been cast, but that smarmy bore only barely gets some chuckles.
posted by psmealey at 8:55 AM on August 12, 2005

Another question: does anyone else out there have a big crush on Arianna Huffington?
posted by redteam at 8:58 AM on August 12, 2005

Old but funny. I'm sure it's a double, but don't care enough to look. Andy Dick is a comic genius, but you're too blind to see it. Ha! Ha!
posted by fungible at 9:05 AM on August 12, 2005

redteam: yes, definitely.

Andy Dick had some pretty good lines on NewsRadio.
posted by docpops at 9:08 AM on August 12, 2005

NewsRadio was an understated gem of a show. Steven Root and the late great Phil Hartman were both hilarious, and having Dave Foley play the straight man was a stroke of genius, after having more or less grown up with his wackiness developed in the Kids in the Hall. Andy may have had a good line or two on the show, but he was definitely one of the weaker performers there.
posted by psmealey at 9:13 AM on August 12, 2005

There are no posts worthy of the mighty FP.

Andy Dick rocks. I can't see the video since my work blocks it but if he's in it, I'm sure I'll get a few guffaws. Also, I hear Andy is hung like a musk oxen. Not sure what that has to do with anything but I thought I'd throw that out there.
posted by KevinSkomsvold at 9:14 AM on August 12, 2005

I hate these jokes.

And yet I'd still say it was the funniest stuff he ever did. Count me among the "don't get it" crowd as far as he's concerned, with the exception of NewsRadio & this video, I've never seen the guy in anything that made me laugh, and the cult of his popularity was so baffling I was once again forced to consider recalibrating my amusemometer, a device so sensitive and finely tuned that it's hardly ever wrong (even in the wake of overwhelming evidence to the contrary), as my friend soyjoy points out above.

I think all of you need your own personal, private little Metafilters in order to insure that you are exposed only to FPPs that meet your exacting personal standards.

That should put an end to all this debate concerning "worthiness."
posted by sourwookie at 9:25 AM on August 12, 2005

I thought only seth got to decide what was and was not worth of an FPP. The rest of it is all just idle banter.
posted by psmealey at 9:28 AM on August 12, 2005

Hey sourwookie, take that to MetaTalk ;)

I agree with docpops. the only thing not funny about this video is that it's so fucking close to the truth, and that's damned depressing.
posted by MrMoonPie at 9:30 AM on August 12, 2005

I thought the video was pretty funny, but I also thought Andy Dick's character was funnier when Martin Short did him on SNL.

I agree. I really enjoyed NewsRadio when I was watching TV. It's on DVD now, it might be the first DVD I'll ever buy.
posted by NewBornHippy at 9:40 AM on August 12, 2005

I can't stand Andy Dick. Unfunny, uninteresting and undeserving of fame. Among the less funny than Andy Dick is Martin Short.

But I still thought this was pretty funny, it would have been funnier with someone else as the speechalist but they don't put me in charge of casting (call me Comedy Central, I work cheap!).

Wow Fenriq. Brutal! Although I would state that Andy Dick is half as funny as David Cross.

Man, I didn't think that bit was funny at all. I usually like Andy Dick, but it's Ariana Huffington that fucking annoys me. She has condescending bitch written all over her.

IMO, the Bushism jokes should have ended at the 1st term. It's not funny anymore. Maybe it'd be kinda funny if Ariana Huffington wasn't in it. She just seems so petty and bitter. I don't know how much, but I'm sure her run for governer and bitchy performance in the debates cost Kerry something (because Teresa and Ariana are fucking bitch twins).

Goddamn. Ariana Huffington. What a bitch.
posted by b_thinky at 12:19 PM on August 12, 2005

What a bitch.

Nice ranting sexism there. The video isn't funny, because Bush's ignorant, mealy-mouthed, illiterate rantings are not funny. They're pathetic and disturbing. We have a moron at the helm. Arianna would make a far better president, as would Teresa.
posted by realcountrymusic at 1:09 PM on August 12, 2005

Well look at that, b_thinky likes the word "bitch".

Let's all hope Bushisms don't become passé because that'll mean they've seeped all the way into the mainstream. God help us.
posted by jimmy76 at 2:15 PM on August 12, 2005

Oh come on, I don't know dick about Dick (he was on television or something) but that was pretty funny. I like the part where he's "helping" Bush through the debate.

"Don't say anything......Hold it.....holditholditholdit....okay now blink a lot."

My vote is for 'amusing', if only because I love laughing at that grandfathered-in halfwit sack of faux-cowshit that you fuckknuckles somehow blundered into electing.
