I had no idea rednecks and hicks had some horrible ADD. I got dizzy towards the end of that. But lots of fabulous imagery to digest now. Why do I have a sudden powerful craving for cheap beer, a broken pickup truck for my three dogs to stand on and bark and some fatback? Damn, there must have been some subliminal imagery in there.

Still doing the via thing huh. On first glance it appears to be a creative (as in agency, firm, etc) invite to a company promotional BBQ. So the theming is great and all and it's quite a chuckle. I just wish they kept to the initial theme -- the first 10 seconds or so all build up great and this could be a showcase of off the wall pictures in a southern theme, but then it goes in and references pop culture (ok, if it's a tv creative I can see a point here), then dips into the whole holier-than-thou thing with several Bush (thus anti-Bush by association) and pop culture references. In short I think it washes itself out instead of remaining truly poignant and neat. Still a good time, tho..

Hit submit too fast, Went back and rewatched and it's really the first 45 seconds that are a gem. Every verse has a theme and it's pretty neat. It's when Deliverance really kicks in that they just start throwing Britney, Bush, etc, in.. owel. What am I harping about, it's a Portland creative company promo and not a work of art. (Sounds of Portland creative dir crying somewhere)

cavalier, I totally see your point, but remember, when the images start coming fast & furious, it'd require a tremendous number of perfectly themed graphics to keep the trend going. At that point it just becomes a crazy pastiche and what few images linger (bush/cheney hat, girls w/guns) are maybe not as perfectly chosen, but I'm okay with the sudden qty overload; it mirrors the crazy breakdown in the song.

How is putting up a bunch of images of people picking on them? Aside from the obvious Deliverance reference, there's no comment by the producer. It Seems that a lot of them are proud and posing for the photos. Hell, noble Injuns should want to be human mascots for football -- they should be proud! Look at them pose for photos. I don't see them as being mocked for being Southerners (there's nothing especially Southern about redneckism, by the way, which a quick trip to rural Minnesota, with its fields of pickup trucks and mullets, will show) or for being poor (its not as though these were Depression-era photos; instead, quite a few of the photos display conspicuous consumption, and redneckism has quite a following in the Middle Class). If anything, the video mocks white trash for being so tasteless. But anything that also includes images of the glorious Dolly Parton cannot entirely be about tastelessness.

Some of the images are pretty awesome. That said, it's not just a collection of pictures- it's set to the theme from Deliverance. And it just keeps going... and going... and oh, there's Bush again... It's just a bunch of funny photos mashed together w/o comment. I doubt Native Americans think we're racist because photos were taken of them. They might if you set them to, say, the theme from Pocahantas. This thing could have been about 12 frames and really funny. Instead, it just drags into lame "point-and-laugh" elitism. Fatback is awesome.

I still don't get how picking on "white trash" or "rednecks" could be considered racist. The only thing seperating them from the rest of the white population is the culture a person chooses. Yes there certainly is somewhat class/culture struggle here, but I wouldn't consider it a race issue. So I don't think the "nigger" or "indian" comparisons are apropo.

I don't know where anyone got the idea this was strictly about the South. I saw snow, an Iowa license plate, a Minnesota website, an elk and a moose. Rednecks are everywhere. These scene are as likely to occur in Ohio, Illinois, Indian, Michigan, etc. as anywhere else. Or, for that matter, upstate NY.

Redneckism seems to spring up in almost any rural environment — but often surprisingly close to an urban environment, including near-suburbs. I've seen mulletheads with pickup trucks and baseball caps throwing barbeques of meat they hunted in rural Louisiana and suburban Nebraska that were indistinguishable from each other. Many of them were firmly middle class as well. Of course, Northern rednecks tend to steer clear of the whole "South will rise again" thing, but they have their own issues.

Where I grew up, a mullet was a type of fish, not a hairstyle, though if you were to go to the annual Mullet Festival you'd see both types in abundance. Those in attendance were known as boggies, which makes me at least part-boggy. And Britney Spears I can see in there, but Dolly Parton?
