Anybody else running out of space on their browser quick links bar? I just found this cool bookmarks springboard page, and it lets me put a picture of my pet giraffe on it!

This is kind of cool. But I don't have a picture of a giraffe much less my pet giraffe.

I found it under the delicious 'cool' tag

This is kind of interesting, it seems like it might be an OK web application but it's a bit rough around the edges.

Helloooo, spam. Before registering and making this useful it might be worthwhile to give the privacy policy a quick read.

From the Privacy Policy page:

No Safari support yet, but surprisingly looks kinda cool! Thanks for the eagle eye, cedar.

PRIVACY POLICY UPDATE:

There is no need for alarm - those are standard legal clauses - note the purposes for which you specifically provided part. This means we don't do anything unless you tell us to.

To avoid further confusion, the clause has been dropped and been replaced with:

Unsolicited commercial email

Your email address will not be disclosed to a third party for the purposes of sending you unsolicited commercial messages. We will not send you unsolicited commercial messages.

Thank you for the traffic spike - it was a delight to see the hits come in. Please do send us feedback - we love to hear from you!

I'm liking that much better.

I really like privacy policies that are in English and say, in essence, "We will never give your email to anyone, under any circumstances, nor will we ever send you mail without your express consent."

Your new one comes real close to my ideal. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

I think I'm going to like this, although we appear to be hammering it at the moment. Aparrie - any plans for other widgets - rss readers, del.icio.us integration, sticky-notes you can edit in-place like image titles in Flickr?

You want it? You got it! Seriously - that's all that matters, so please continue to let us know. We're currently working on getting Safari working properly, for those who are trying with mixed results on the Mac. Firefox on the Mac works fine.

Thanks for the feedback!

If it had what Jimbob suggested, I would use it all the time.

Hey since you're listening, aparrie, my image that I chose for the background is tiling and I want it to either stretch to fill the window or center with a blank border. Thanks. And can you get me a weather widget?

I forgot to add that the option of pretty colors and backgrounds is what makes this a possibility to replace google's ig as my homepage. So good job.

So far I like this a lot, thanks aparrie.

The start page is cool, and works well.

Not so impressed by my password being incorporated, in plain text, within a URL sent over an unencrypted link.

I know it's only my low-security compulsory-registrations password, but even so - this is the first site I've ever come across that makes no attempt at all to protect it.

The redirection of Safari users to getfirefox.com is a bit snarky.
posted by dmd at 7:57 AM on August 18, 2005

flabdablet is right - all the info you supply to this site is sent in cleartext. Don't use a password you want to keep "secret".

It's very nifty-keeno!

What are you guys using the scraped info for? Does this have anything to do with, say, Tom Cruise or Scientology?

Passwords sent as cleartext:

Especially given this part of the "terms and conditions":

You agree to keep any personal login name and any password provided by us to you confidential, and to be responsible for any loss or damage resulting from use of your password by any third party.

I will stop blathering about this now.
posted by bigdaddy at 10:23 AM on August 18, 2005

Password issue will be fixed asap, and bigdaddy, what on earth are you talking about re: Cruise?

We will be using aggregate link data to recommend link submissions. We'll also be careful to only make a link part of the aggregate statistics if lots of people are linking to it, so that one-off private links aren't disclosed.

You can choose not to contibute any of your links, but it'll be good for the community if you do and I can't think of a reason not to. Nonetheless we give you the option.

Thanks to all for the feedback - this is all going into the feature implementation queue.

This is what I love about MeFi, a cool new site and one of the creators is one of our own and is able to respond in real time to feature requests and concerns.

Awesome stuff indeed.

fenriq writes "one of the creators is one of our own"

Well to be fair he wasn't one of our own until we started hammering his server. Glad you signed up aparrie and and are being responsive.

In fact I just remembered why I didn't sign up years ago - Metafilter was being hammered and not accepting new accounts!

Go Metafilter!

*someone just pointed out that that last comment looks sarcastic. Seriously though, Go Metafilter! The site traffic today has been awesome and feedback most useful.

Why do I need a web site to house links to other web sites that I like? Isn't this a bit like creating a TV station that lists other TV stations?

Something like Metafilter I understand because it offers me new sites to explore. But do I need more web stuff? More passwords? And another web site of my own?

To some degree too this reminds me of those books people buy to remind themselves to read books.
