It's a great idea, but there's something rather important missing: the music. If I found some new song or artist by browsing PhoneTags, I'd want to listen to the music. Going by the screenshots, I wouldn't be able to. I can't imagine Flickr being much of a success if you could only see your own photos, and surfing tags just took you to the titles of other people's photos.

Hey - this is Tom from plasticbag.org - the BBC already posts samples of songs on its music site, so we could fairly easily add those to the service (check out the Pixies profile). And over the weekend the Director General talked about how the BBC was interested in helping people fulfil their music journeys with some form of purchase: "But the idea that, in the age of the i-pod, the public would not welcome the opportunity to actually buy a download of a piece of music they have heard on a BBC site – and to be able to buy in a simple and clear way without having to go through 29 pages of health warnings – seems to me ridiculous. Interesting - I'd just assumed that the Beeb wouldn't be getting into being a commercial download service. With that in place, this would be unbelievably useful. But I'd still be a bit miffed if I had to pay to tag the songs I like, then pay again to get the songs I like. Maybe adding tags could be tied in to some sort of voucher scheme to reward active taggers, say a free song for every x songs tagged and every x songs purchased. It just seems a bit iffy to be paying to tag when it's the BBC, which I'm paying for...

I like the idea a lot - I also love the (your?) phrase "mass amateurisation", that's great, describes the current trend down to a tee. I think what's powerful about phonetags is the way you can see your own tagworthy tracks, or also roll-up and see the whole community's behaviour in aggregate. That seems to me to be a much more open, portable and, well, useful model than the treatment of user-originated metadata (primarily ratings-based) in, say, iTunes or LAUNCHcast...

Definitely a good idea but I'd echo jack_mo's sentiments about being charged. The idea that you could earn something back for your efforts seems to make sense.
