That particular shot dosn't have the convention center/superdome. There was a page with 3mb fullsized images that I was looking at earlier (including that one). Don't know where they are now, though

the Superdome is there... not sure where the convention center is. I figured it was probably buried somewhere in a thread, but I don't think that discounts it's FPP worthiness. I had been looking for something like this before it came out.

Interesting. This photo has the same cloud pattern on it as the photo at DigitalGlobe: http://digitalglobe.com/images/katrina/new_orleans_msi_aug31_2005_dg.jpg but the AP stuck their logo on it?

They probably bought the image from the same source, nothing wrong with that (though attributing the source would be useful).

the convention center is right on the river between the bridge and the french quarter. To the east of the superdome. Went there in 2000 for SIGGRAPH.

Yeah, this looks like someone ran the image from earlier through Zoomify. I actually have used Zoomifyer at work for virtual microscopy; it's actually a pretty neat Flash app, but you really do need a huge source image to get the full effect. I recommend the Baghdad image (for comparison, the source image on that is 18,000 x 12,223). In any case, back to N.O.: Google Earth has some functionality for examining the flood damage too.

NOAA has all their post-flood aerial imagery up, taken very recently (they just put up the downtown shots today.) More will be made available as they take them and process them. If you don't know the local geography very well:

As it mentions in the fine print, images have not been rotated. This means that up is not necessarily north, and it makes finding things tricky, but doable.

And since I forgot to mention it: yes, it's much much higher resolution than the sat imagery. 3 pixels to the metre. So, brundlefly, you might be able to find your mom's house.

Anybody else find the exposed roof of the Superdome to be something of a metaphor for the whole experience? This thin, pristine-looking membrane is torn off the roof of a "modern" miracle building, exposing a beaten, weathered, shabby, war-torn-looking roof of a building that failed miserably. I get goose bumps - maybe it's just me.
