Best of the web! Thanks for the link, Wolfdog. posted by ktoad at 5:06 PM on September 8, 2005
You probably recognize Himeji from Ran. I love two stories about it: First that it was designed to channel a brute-force attack into a spiral approach, but it was never attacked in this manner; and second that in 1871, the end of feudal Japan, it was auctioned off for demolition for 23 yen, but was too expensive to demolish. As a result the Army took it over and it is now maintained as a national treasure. posted by dhartung at 5:35 PM on September 8, 2005

Thank you, Ookamiinu. I have long been a fan of Japanese castles, and now I can check off which ones I've been to and which remain. posted by birdsquared at 5:55 PM on September 8, 2005

Brilliant post Wolfdog. That Fushimi Castle is one unlucky castle - get built, earthquake. get built again, get destroyed in a battle. get rebuilt, get dismantled. get incorporated into 3 other castles, end up as a replica. Who'd be a castle eh! posted by tellurian at 1:13 AM on September 9, 2005
Wolfdog, this is one of the best posts I've seen in a long long time. Thanks for putting it on the front page, and all that. posted by OmieWise at 5:29 AM on September 9, 2005
