More than can be said for MeFi, apparently. Myself, I like it when people do nice things. - CL I think there's a distinct difference between nice and WTF were they thinking?... Although the gesture I'm sure gives certain cliques a nice warm fuzzy, From a safety point of view, I think it was dangerous, and a wholly unnecessary risk to human wellbeing. They mingled with dead fowl. They tromped around a disaster area. And from what I read, they sounded like complete outsiders to the area (meaning they didn't know their way around, nor the customs of the local population). all in a crisis situation. Try that in some parts of the nation / world, and you'll get shot on sight. And I'm seriously not kidding.. I hope I'm not the only one who thinks the gesture may have been "nice" but completely out of line. Sorry to not have fun with this but... geez...

That family members - dogs, cats, birds, etc. - where refused during rescue and evacuation says so much about the quality of some peoples humanity... I would die to save a life. It's not mine to decide whoes life needs saving. . . that's all I have to say.

I also have an opposable thumb, they don't even have an opposable claw. While your statement is a typical 'feel good' statement, it is precisely that type of margin thinking which turns so many away from the enviro/animal rights(?) concept. Over a good many years I have found rights belong only to those who also have responibility. I have chickens who are pampered beyond belief. But they don't have any responsibilities, and thy have no 'rights'

You know what? It's the lady's time, she can do with it what she pleases. She wanted to save some chickens. Good for her. Arguments about how it was wrong or selfish are just lame rationalizations because you don't like her world-view. If more people could actually have the basic decency to respect life like she does, we might live in a bette world. As it turns out, we've got this cesspool.

Just a thought. Fowl in Asia carries a virus. What about these chickens, that have been hanging about the foul (sic) waters after the hurricane? Are they safe to eat anyway? Might as well save 'em.

Sentient beings absolutely have the right to live their full lives. I agree, as far as it goes, but are you really claiming that chickens are sentient? If you are, then you have a different understanding of the word sentient than I do. I'm not saying that your definition is wrong, just different. But then maybe I'm confusing sentient with sapient...

Is this some sort of new genetic modification? My 2 year old nephew is just now developing self-awareness and he can talk. It's been a long time since I've seen a chicken that could talk.
