Why is everybody mad about the cups?

Last month there were those who were mad about "made-in-Israel-paper cups" at the King Khaled National Guard Hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Now it's a quote from novelist Armistead Maupin inscribed on Starbucks coffee cups at Baylor University that have made others mad!

Concerned Women for America charged that Starbucks is promoting a homosexual agenda with some paper cups containing Maupin's quote:

"My only regret about being gay is that I repressed it for so long. I surrendered my youth to the people I feared when I could have been out there loving someone. Don't make that mistake yourself. Life's too damn short."

CWA demanded that the cups containing the quote be removed from campus. Baylor Dining Services complied with the request.

Baylor is a Baptist-affiliated school in Texas. Why does this surprise anyone? Linda Ricks, Marketing Program Manager of Baylor Dining Services, said Baylor Dining Services agreed to get rid of the cups out of respect for "Baylor culture." "There are different view points on the Baylor campus," Ricks said. "We pulled the cup to be sensitive to view points." Apparently, some view points are more worth being sensitive toward than others...

I need to start referring to the struggle for civil rights by any group of people I feel squeamish about as an "agenda". As an ex-Baylor student, I consider it a fun little victory that those cups were even there to begin with, for the short time they were. I used to laugh all the time over the petty little things the Baylor students and administration would do to try and preserve the facade of wholesomeness. His observation is at the same time more subtle and more blunt than you think. As it is, I also have some difficult understanding how someone would pay US$ 7 for a cup of coffee. In my country (Brazil) I would have to look real hard for someplace selling coffee this expensive. Kevin, I like hot coffee too, I just don't really like paying $5 for a cup of it with some attitude on the side. I brew my own at home for a buck a pot and it tastes better than anything I've gotten at Starbucks, except for that Caramel Machiato thingie I got like two years ago when I last stepped foot inside one (and it was for a meeting with a photographer). The greatest trick Starbucks ever pulled on the people is to trick them into paying $5 for fifty cents worth of coffee, makes for some pretty juicy profit margins, I'd think.

$5 plus tip for a cup of coffee I rarely go to Starbucks -- but, while traveling this past week I had a large (Venti) brewed coffee at Boston's Logan and Dallas/Fort Worth airports. Each came out to be about $2.85. Granted that's a premium price, but very much in keeping with the local coffee shop around the corner from where I live. The fancy-schmancy drinks, however, are expensive -- and more akin to consuming a dessert treat (just check out the contents, calories and fat amounts).

fenriq, if you're paying $5 for a cup of coffee at Starbucks you must be getting one mighty frou-frou concoction containing rare-earth metals and obscure herbs from uncontacted indigenous tribesmen. A drip coffee runs between one and two dollars depending on which of their cutely-named sizes you get. Espresso drinks maybe 30% more at most. I know this because there's one downstairs from my office and little else even remotely convenient. Oh, and tipping is not compulsory for counter service.

Hmm. People are so weird. Why do those *weird* Christians (as opposed to 'normal' Christians) get so uptight about homosexuality as opposed to all the REALLY fucked up things that people do. I thought the whole idea of Christianity is that we're all sinners or whatever and that people shouldn't be judgemental 'cos nobody is perfect etc etc (i.e. let he who is without sin throw the first stone etc). Yet these nutters obsess over it. As I've pointed out before here on MF, I'm kinda anti-homosexuality, in that I think it's WEIRD to wanna bang your own gender. But on the other hand I don't really care if it makes people happy. I think people who get upset about other people being homosexual is just silly, or actually worse in that it's stupid. I don't get why people get so upset over something like sexual preference whilst there's so many more important things to be pissed off over. People just seem so paranoid... And it always seems silly to me to be fighting for women's rights or gay rights or whatever.. I always thought we should just fight for human rights and that should be enough, whatever your gender or sexual preference is. But I guess as long as we have these weirdos freaking out and trying to control other people that are just trying to live their lives and be happy... like everyone else.... well maybe we do need special emphasis on these things. I do have a homosexual agenda. I want every gay teen to have a better adolescence than I did. Actually, I grew up in the upper midwest, so this isn't much. Ratzi the Nazi is doing his part by running gays out of the Catholic church. Gay priests (the none-pedophiles I mean) deserve a fuck of a lot better than the Catholic church of the 21st century. "half-caf, soy, vanilla, pumpkin, maple crunch latte." When I dated a girl from Spain, that was the sort of thing she used to love to order at Starbucks. She'd reply to my protests: "Why not? All your American coffee is shit anyway. If I can't get real coffee, I might as well drink your made-up drinks." Oh, and the entire Baylor women's lacrosse team, as of three years ago, lived together in one house and was exclusively lesbian. In a move that shocked her parents, a girl who had an internship with me "became" gay by joining the team, then moving in with them. When she first went to college, she was just good at lacrosse! She even had a chaste boyfriend and led prayer services! Then she started living with lesbians and then having sex with lesbians and then all of the sudden, she was a lesbian. Luckily for her parents, she still votes Republican and goes to Baptist services. (Part of the reason why the religious right may be so afraid of teh gay is that so many of them are so repressed that the sudden realization that they're gay and have been all along is really frightening to the rest of the repressed folks that just don't know whether they're gay or have simply never had hetero sex because they love the LORD).

The best part about BJU:

All weapons must be turned in for storage. Trigger locks are required for pistols. Fireworks are not permitted on campus.

So they're allowed to have guns (as long as they're stored somewhere with a trigger lock) but not even allowed to see a PG-13 movie? Wow. I mean, wow.

Like they said in Dogma, "It was a good idea, more like a suggestion really." So often it seems the best practicioners of the example of Christ wouldn't come within a hundred yards of a "christian" church. Having said that, there are also a great many good people who are truly Christian. These folks would never judge or turn their backs on others different from themselves. As such they seldom get any media attention as they quietly go about serving and loving others. No missing rich white girls or lurid sex tales to report, so it isn't newsworthy.

Apropos of nothing, I would like to point out to everyone present that Baylor College of Medicine is in no way affiliated with Baylor University. It is not religious, and it does offer benefits to same-sex partners. This is not relevant to the discussion. I just try to bring it up anytime Baylor University and the craziness thereof is mentioned.
