Mandarin Farewell

Mandarin: 1998-2005, R.I.P. (warning: 21 MB QT Movie) A farewell slide show with musical accompaniment by/to a great Denton, Texas band: Mandarin. Many of the images are of Denton and the surrounding area, tour photos and various other bric a brac captured beautifully by Peter Salisbury, the bass player who compiled the slideshow. They were my friends and Denton was my home for many years. Their music will be missed by many.
I saw 'em in a bar here and they were surprisingly solid. They played better than the Gourds, who were the headliner...

The Best Ever Death Metal Band out of Denton
Was a couple of kids who'd been friends since grade school
One was named Cyrus, the other was Jeff
The practiced twice a week in Jeff's bedroom
[...]
When you punish a person for dreaming his dream
Don't expect him to thank or forgive you
The Best Ever Death Metal Band out of Denton
Will in time both out pace and outlive you
Hail Satan! Hail Satan, tonight! Hail Hail.

Thanks for this. I started keeping an eye on the Dento music scene after being blown away by Lift to Experience. coincidentally I saw fellow Denton resident and total gentleman Josh Pearson playing in Camden on Friday night. His show was stunning as always. And hey, you still have Midlake right?

Mandarin was my favorite Denton band. From what I understand, they were right in the middle of recording their new album when the decision came to end it. I guess when it's time, it's time.

....i used to live in Denton and lived in Dallas for years and never heard of this band. *shrug*
Brave Combo is fabulous stuff, though.
(Curse you, Omie and your quickness with the clever quotes.)

i used to visit the fertile land of the screamin' eagles during college... oh, the cloudy, fading memories. there's a great dub band called sub oslo for those into spacious sounds. and although their site is low on content, look out for baptist generals, coming to a saloon near you.
