The Cornell Lab of Ornithology is a great source for all kinds of information on our feathered friends. The bird identification section is particular useful. There are also NestCams.

Ok, that's a cool resource, and all I've actually looked at are the NestCams. What's not to like about a cluthc of barn owls? Awesome. I'm gonna go look at the actual site now.

Oh, man, I grew up listening to my mom's birdsong LPs from the Cornell Ornithology department. I've forgotten most of the birdsongs but I still have the voice embedded in my head, announcing the birds in clipped, precised tones: "Red. Eyed. Vireo." , and so on.

You should check out these Breezy Singers - motion activated toy birds based on research from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

Several of these birds recently invaded my office. They are wonderful.

I'd like to to take this opportunity to point out that Cornell is awesome.

Wolfdog - I'm wondering if these CDs are similar to the ones you mentioned listening to when you were a kid? They sound pretty cool. Might have to borrow them from the library or something.

I also wonder how similar the birdsong recordings are to the shortware radio code recordings that were used in Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot album. A friend has a huge collection, but I can't remember the name...

I'm lucky enough to live 2 miles from the lab. There's a series of tidy paths through a woodland teeming with different bird species. It's an idyllic lunchtime stroll, if you can ignore the traffic from the nearby highway.
