This reminds me... I remember reading about a horror movie director that would submit his film to be rated with a light hearted "placeholder" soundtrack so that a film would seem less violent than it really was, and thus get a lighter rating so it wouldn't have to be edited.

Man -- that's amazingly good. I just forwarded that on to my SO -- The Shining is her favorite movie. And I've just got to say, the real trailer is amazingly good, too -- I hadn't seen that before. It's remarkable that, even when it's just one stationary shot and even when you KNOW WHAT'S COMING how completely tense and eerie it is. We need more trailers like that.

Heh, it looks like PS260 is a high-profile editing house based out of New York. If you browse their site, it looks like their staff have edited number of high-profile commercials (IBM, Heineken, Sony). Anyway... This was great, but it reminded me of the trailer for No Man's Land that was on the DVD. For those of you who don't remember it, No Man's Land is about a Bosnian and a Serb trapped in a trench between the opposing forces together. It's about the horrors of war, the ineptitude of the UN in handling the situation, etc. But the trailer made it look like a light-hearted comedy, by cherry-picking parts of scenes just like this. What crazy adventures will this rag-tag bunch of outsiders have next? You'll just have to watch it to find out.

This remade Shining trailer is inspired. I hope they make more of them! One of my earliest distinct memories of moviegoing is seeing the theatrical teaser trailer for The Shining. The trailer consists of the Elevator Flood Of Blood Scene. Since the film was released in May 1980, I must have been 7 or 8 when I saw the trailer. (side note: why they showed this trailer before a G or PG rated movie is a mystery to me.) I remember seeing the trailer, and asking my 10 year old brother next to me if the hotel guests were going to drown in all that blood. My brother said (God bless him) that the hotel was closed and no one was there. I thought he meant 'closed for the night' (which makes no sense), and I remember thinking "gee, what about the janitor? isn't anyone at the hotel?" I didn't see the movie until I was 16 or 17. Quickly, The Shining became one of my favorite scary movies. When I received The Shining DVD for Christmas a few years back, my brother and sister and I all gathered around the TV and watched the trailer again. For all three of us, it was like exorcising an ancient demon, like confronting the monster in your bedroom closet.

But that 'foster father' misdirects the entire sense of the thing by casting it as more of a family-friendly thing. FULL DISCLOSURE: I'vwe been wating for the moment when either free time or technology allows people to make ther own film mash-ups from existing movies, sort of like loading up a 5 disk CD player and setting the thing to 'random play', but not as random. Inagine a 'new' cut of 'North By Northwest' with inserts from 'To Catch a Theif' or the original 'Get Carter' with inserts from 'The Ipcress File' and 'The Fourth Protocol' — there's a whole world of narrative out there, just waiting to be re-cut by hobbyists!

vhsiv, I agree - that can't come quickly enough. Like all the scenes movies with Bogart that were spliced together for 'Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid', but with stranger plots. I think as with audio mash-ups, there would be a lot of dreck, but the really good stuff would shine. ...as it were.

Not to worry Zack, I understand what you're getting at. I have this really strange little editor's imagination — I probably ought to have tried to get into film that way, but was discouraged from the field by 'artistic differences'. My collage imagination has served me in other ways, however. Once home-made movie mash-ups go public (and the lawyers get over it) I expect it to become a fairly big art-form, with Kine-mixers getting shows at MoMA and other big art-houses. Now that I think about it, it could be a win-win situation for all parties concerned: The big studios could start to see a new and positive revenue stream from all sorts of drek that just gathering dust in their vaults as mash-up editors mine old footage for cutaways, SFX and sampled dialogue. The only impediment will be the amount of planning it'll take to put stuff like that together. But if Chris Marker (not to mention Kenneth Anger) could do it in 1962, it should be substantially easier to do it with computers in the 21st c.
