Snowe Days for Democrats? It may take only one party-switch to give Democrats control of the Senate. Maine may offer just the one.

More realistically, as the article points out, the departure of Helms and Thurmond to warmer climes may be imminent. What it means, in pragmatic terms, is moot: having the Foreign Affairs committee in Democratic hands would at least create the potential for advances on relations with Cuba and the UN. But in reality, you get one set of career politicians playing musical chairs with another set.

Having grown up in Auburn, Maine, I can say that Mainers would vote for Olympia regardless of what party she belonged to, but I can't imagine her changing party affiliations to suit the machinations of the Democrats in the Senate. She was a House Republican for many years when the Dems ran the house, and didn't switch then just to get a better profile. And I guffawed at the suggestion that a Bush/Snowe ticker would have done any better than Bush/Cheney. Outside of Maine, Olympia is almost completely unknown -- Susan Collins stole more thunder as a first-term senator than Olympia has done in 30-odd years of Congressional service. Let's work on killing off Strom and Jesse; that seems like a *much* better idea.

Why would you need to work on killing them off? It seems it would be easier and more legal to let biology run its course (unless they're actually not human).

I think it's more likely that Strom or Jesse might croak.That's the only way anyone's going to get them out of office, BTW.
