Turning a black eye Brown. Facing accusations of cronyism from all sides -- left, right and middle -- why would Bush push the issue by appointing his personal lawyer to the Supreme Court?

This post was deleted for the following reason: OpEds ahoy!

The obvious answer would be to cover his ass and, personally, that answer is more satisfying than the distraction idea, which is too often brought up whenever a Rovian tack seems especially perplexing.

I wish I had the nerve to link to a site called OpEd News.

I think the obvious reason is he doesn't give a shit.

Why does he need to cover his ass? He's a lame-duck president. Even if he somehow gets impeached, the proceedings are managed by the (Republican) House and Senate, not the judicial branch.

My thought is that Brown 2.0 gives GOP senators and representatives up for reelection in 2006 the ability to strengthen their connection with their voter base, by questioning the cultural ideals of Bush's selection.

Trashing Bush's decisions at this juncture costs them nothing, as they would be reaffirming their GOP/culture-war ideals by doing so.

I believe that he does not know any better, believes fully in what he does, comes from a background of priviledge in which what he does is always the best thing; and that he is not able to change his ways--in short, arrogant, self-absorbed, not very wise.

As for the rest of his cronies: A Bush failure does matter. For Bush, it is history and his avowed "mission." (I know: laugh now.) But the Congress must run again, and if too much comes down on Bush it comes down on the party too and they get hurt. They need to figure out when it is safe and wide to jump ship.

When he comes to trial for this sort of shit, he'll have someone who says, "He's a nice guy. Nice, but dumb."

SNL this past week mentioned (on update...as a method of satire) that Bush's basic principal was to keep doing worse....Economy>Iraq>Gas>Katrina>Gas...etc...to divert you from his prior idiocy.

Bush doesnt consider helping his friends to be a bad thing. He rewards those who help him. It's his personality.

Is this a quiz? Wait, I know this one...wait...c'mon, I know it. Actually, I've got no idea. I assume it's just because he doesn't care about the criticism and her pro-business positions are more important than any shit he might have to take. I certainly don't think he did it so that Repubs in the Senate would have a chance to attack his choice. I don't think he's that broad minded.

I like several of your answers.
It's very simple.
Loyalty trumps everything for Bush.
