I've been using meebo for a few weeks, ever since trillian got blocked at work. A little buggy at this point, but they're continually adding improvements. The biggest issue (which they promise to fix soon) is that you can't modify your buddy list. Other than that, though, it's quite good, especially for an alpha.

Googles IM is based on Jabber. You can implement it in virtually any language including Ajax/JS whatever you want to call it. Bet they have a JS client in the wings. Thing is outside of company firewalls why would I prefer this over a standalone app like Trillian?

I think the primary utility of Meebo is permitting login to more than one chat network at a time, rather than an end-run around firewalls. (They say they'll have alternate ways to access the site, eventually, just for that need -- notalentassclown.meebo.com, anyone?) This would be convenient for travelers, consultants, and so on. Incidentally, AIM Express just went Ajax.
