A repost, I do believe. And the content is a bit too melodramatic, and therefore, silly. posted by zardoz at 3:51 AM on October 21, 2005

But seriously, I'm not surprised that this keeps popping up; it's a well-crafted bit of speculative fiction.
As a side note to the esteemed grrarrgh00, EPIC was mentioned this past week at a statewide technology conference here in the First State. A University Professor giving a talk on blogs, wikis and RSS mentioned it as an example of thought pieces about where we might be headed. posted by mmahaffie at 6:11 AM on October 21, 2005
Old and stupid. They spend half the fucking video recapping what's already happened—or rather, what had already happened by the year 2004. "In 1998, Google was created..." Wake me up when we get to the future, will you? And then the last half, the Amazing Predictions, turn out to be an overlong elaboration of a zillion op-ed thumbsuckers about how New Media are going to ruin Old Media.
Also, 1989 was by no stretch of the imagination "midcentury." posted by languagehat at 6:15 AM on October 21, 2005
I thought is was funny, in a self-parody, satire of overweening earnestness sort of way. posted by mmahaffie at 6:17 AM on October 21, 2005
GOOGLEZON!!11
if they didn't trot that out, as far as I remember, it would have been okay.
but anyway, I watched it in, like, 1987, and this is an octuple post. posted by blacklite at 6:19 AM on October 21, 2005
Googlezon Modeling School, learn how to look familiar to others. posted by eatitlive at 7:06 AM on October 21, 2005
"...and as we all know, 'Googlezon' would make an excellent name for a rock band."
Languagehat, you're the first person I've heard comment about that midcentury bit, although it gets me every time I hear this thing. Chalk it up to bad editing. When we converted this from a fugly-ass Final Cut Pro movie into Flash, we shortened the intro (not enough, apparently! :), which initially stretched the timeline back into the '60s. I think we talked about ARPANET, but I'm not sure. posted by grrarrgh00 at 8:19 AM on October 21, 2005
