Lecture Musical is really good too.

I'm not sure why, since the premise is so slight, but that had me giggling the whole time. It must have been the anticipation.

It's very good, but it's been here before.

Wow, three times in ten months...

In my estimate, it was worth revisiting. If I'm wrong, Sooooooooryyyyyyyyyy.

Funny cuz it's true. BTW, on a Mac there's finally a third party tool to turn that obnoxious noise off.

Ok, am I the only one who would like to have that startup sound? Where can I get it?

I agree, it was a pretty cool little piece of music. Everything in Prangstgrüp's archive is great - I especially like "Subway Lectures."

I could have sworn they had the startup sound as an mp3 several months ago when this was new.

Lecture Musical had me in tears. I wish that would happen in one of my classes.

Where were these filmed?
posted by kosher_jenny at 3:26 PM on October 21, 2005

I was in the room when this happened. I'm not in the film itself, so of course no one is going to believe me but it's true. It was indeed quite loud, and I remember it being pretty funny at the time.
I don't know about all of the videos, but Startup Sound and Lecture Musical were filmed a couple of years ago at Columbia. PRANGSTGRÜP was doing a bunch of stuff around campus a little while back, like seting up their own Porno Club table at an activities fair for undergrad freshman with a lot of explicit hardcore porn mags displayed, next to the Sci Fi club or the Catholics on Campus or whatever.
I vaguely remember talk about them being in discussions with MTV about doing a show, but I have no idea if there is any truth to that or not. Maybe just wild campus rumors. Or another prank.
All in all it was funny stuff.

I've never seen these before. Totally surreal. And GREAT!

Yeah, right. Who the hell actually shuts down their Mac?

Unlike PC notebooks, the Mac's sleep mode Just Works (tm).

Shhhhh! You're harshing the mellow.

I shut down my Mac.

Mind, that was during the first few days of switching, when my deeply-ingrained PC habits were still in effect.

These days what's really turning my crank is not shutting down my main applications. I can actually leave Mail and Opera open for days and weeks at a time. The only time I quit is by accident now!

The music reminded me of stuff by Brian Eno - then I remembered he had made the Windows 95 startup sound already and found him quoted:
"The thing from the agency said, “We want a piece of music that is inspiring, universal, blah- blah, da-da-da, optimistic, futuristic, sentimental, emotional,” this whole list of adjectives, and then at the bottom it said “and it must be 3 1/4 seconds long."
