It's reasonable to show a photo of a cornucopia and say, "this is a literal cornucopia", since "this" clearly doesn't refer to the representation but the thing being represented. Otherwise, you wouldn't ever be able to say "this is a literal [anything]" because some pedant will just say "no, 'this' is a pronoun." It's fair to indicate a thing using a representation for that thing, with the understanding that the representation is meant to stand in for the thing itself. Language fails entirely if you cannot use symbols.

Sorry to have kicked off the pedantry. It really bugs me when people who are literate enough to know better abuse literal as some sort of meaningless intensifier when they obviously mean a figurative (metaphorical) sense. At least it's not the usual its/it's or to/too or affect/effect.
