Oh, Color! From abstract artistic applications to the history of pigments, color has lots splainin' to do. For example, who put color in my World War I photos?! (insert Michael Jackson joke here)

No, no. Leave out the Michael Jackson joke. Instead, use the time you save to head over and see The Empire That Was Russia, in which Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii makes absolutely delicious color photos. It's been posted here before, but it's worth viewing again because it's a true delight.

One amazing thing with the Prokudin-Gorskii plates is that one can search the collection for interesting-looking images and do the job using Photoshop or any editor able to mix the red, green and blue layer. Straightforward, but still magical.
