Why do java applets stop at the firewall whereas flash programs work just fine? (rhetorical question, more to do with the particular firewall I guess)

But it seems like for all Java's power and promise, Flash delivers a more user-friendly experience. Additionally, I think the only browser to support Java 5 is Internet Explorer. Flash just works.

Burp...(!) heres how to do it in 15.

Make a bite on the edge of about 75% into the pie and then leaving a space equal to the possible diameter of the bite before taking another 75% bite. The trick here is to take 1 or 2 x 100% bites as well - this pushes you from 16 to 15 at the end.

Cycle around once, then do another cycle for whats left over - then finish off the center carefully.

If you are too greedy and bite too deep at every bite in the first cycle then the remaining pie gaps are too wide for the bites in the second cycle.

Got the funny feeling i was looking at capitalism in action while playing this....eat all your resources constantly at full capacity, without thinking of the next bite in relationship to the whole picture, and you'll never get all the pie.

Selective waste in the name of progress is 'more' rather than 'less' - interesting...

<i>...eat all your resources constantly at full capacity, without thinking of the next bite in relationship to the whole picture, and you'll never get all the pie.</i>

The mathematician's phrase (IAAM) is "The greedy algorithm fails."

17 first try, then 15. My line of reasoning first time was "Let's worry about the crust" and placed all the bites around the outside, in such a way that the points of intersection of the two circles (pie and bite) were actually opposite one another on the bite. That maximizes the around of crust bitten.

However, the crust length is not an integer multiple of the amount bitten this way, as it turns out; it's 9+something. So one should bite slightly less crust and more pie, in such a way that once one makes it fully around the outside, it takes exactly 10 bites. After that it's pretty easy.

15, first try. If you go the crust-first route, you have to minimize overlap while maximizing inner area. The further out you place the circle, the wider area you eat, (until you reach the diameter) but the less inner area you eat. Try placing the circle about 2/3rds over the edge and you'll see what I mean.

After rawfishy's comment, I did in 15 fairly easily. I think there's a slightly easier way, though. First, take a bite on the crust with about 75% of the circle inside the pie. Then take another bite right next to that on the crust, but make the crust edges touch a diameter of the bite circle (maximizing the amount of crust edge consumed). Alternate these bites around the crust edge. At that point, the interior can be finished off with the remaining bites.

Yep, 15 takes a bit of tries, but here's the easy way.

Each bite is 10.4% of the pie. You have 15 bites, that obviously must average 6.66% each.

Just make sure that you always fill at least 64.1% of the circle with each bite, and you can't lose. Easy as pie!

The easy way - start with a bite that has the inner edge of the circle exactly in the middle of the pie. Now take another bite, mirror image. Makes a figure 8. Now take two more bites on the sides to turn it into a four-leafed clover in the middle of the pie. Now go around the edge, keeping each bite as <em>far away from the center of the pie </em>as you can. 15 bites, no crumbs.
