How do you make a pug more adorable? It's a trick question, you can't. But if you DO enjoy the odd bit of miscegenation in your puppy's bloodline, apparently pugs & beagles make a nice mix.

Dear god the schnoodle is fucking cute...

This panda dog rules too (seems to be some sort of chow mix, what with purple tongue and puffy coat).

There was a Pug in my dog's obedience class named Puggles. Pug owners chill me to the bone -- pugs are such a horrifying mix of cute and repulsive that it takes a... special sort of person.

All I can think of is... the poor, poor beagle that birthed that thing. It probably went insane.

Beedogs.com is the premier online repository for pictures of dogs in bee costumes.

Awesome. All this time, I've had to settle for the dozens of inferior online repositories for pictures of dogs in bee costumes.

I was thinking at first that that was a parody site, but you'd have to be a right bastard to create a parody site with (seemingly) actual dog adoption info on it.

I have friends who just paid a pretty penny for one of these abominations. I would much rather have a Panda Dog. I am close with my Chow-Akita mix, but she more resembles a grizzly than a panda.

As a proud owner of a Dachuahua or Chiweenie (a nightmarish Chihuahua-Dachshund mix), I'm all for people embracing mutts and mixed-breeds. However, there are plenty of them in shelters. There's no need to go to a breeder for that. Haven't people heard of hybrid vigor?

annaramma, please post pictures of your dog.

Honestly, all of you haters out there, dogs are supposed to be mutts. It's only been through centuries of selective mutation and inbreeding that we even have different "breeds" of dogs at all. The difference between a St. Bernard and a chihuaha is the fault of humans.

The only other dog that I would consider getting beside a pug is this rare breed my wife is obsessed with called a Mi-Ki... but they are ridiculously expensive and I still don't know much about them, so I think I'll stick with a pug.

Pugs are wonderful dogs. How can you not look at a pug without feeling instant sympathy for it? After all, it's not every day that you see something that looked like it ran into a wall at full speed, is it?

When it's time to bring a new dog into our household, I'd be thrilled if I could find a pug at a shelter, just as we found our lhasa and poodle. But no matter what, we surely are never going to pay for an overbred mix like a puggle or a labradoodle or peekapoo. They're cute, sure, they've got great characteristics, absolutely. But there are just too many dogs in the world as it is.

Remember, as The Mighty Bob says, help control the pet population: get your pet spayed or neutered.

Pugs were bred for one thing: human companionship. I have had three in my life and two are still with me. I never cared for or paid any attention to the breed until my partner introduced me to one years ago. I even had a pug/? mixed breed for 11 years that I rescued. He was smart, happy and a great friend. His name fit perfectly, Maestro. God, I miss that dog!

Once you're "pugged" it's usually for life.

Honestly, all of you haters out there, dogs are supposed to be mutts.

Nope. If you buy into that line of thinking, dogs are "supposed to be" fully wild wolves. Bad-ass, kill you as soon as look at you if they think they can, suspicious of humans, deeply predatory, full-on no-shit wolves.

Please stop supporting breeders.

You left out the "backyard" or "unethical" or "puppy-mill" from that sentence. There's not a problem with lots of carefully bred dogs from stock that's been health-tested for five generations and been graded for conformation and performance being left in shelters or wandering loose. The problem stems from people who let their dog fuck another one because they want their children to see the miracle of birth, or from people who just breed any two dogs together and hope to make a little money from it. It's not hard to find a solid, ethical breeder -- just look for one who seems as interested in sizing you up as you are about sizing up the dogs.

Remember, as The Mighty Bob says, help control the pet population: get your pet spayed or neutered.

Or just keep them from wandering off. No matter how much dog-splooge his large, unsightly balls pump into him, our dog can't get anything pregnant because he's always either in here with us or on a leash and under our control. Not that there's anything wrong with neutering your dog, but it's not an absolute necessity if you're willing to be more vigilant over your dog.

I have a pug Boston Terrier mix, which some weird folks call "bugs". Our dog is named Moxie, and we get her from the local shelter. She is insane, but in a good way.

I've never thought of her as a "status dog". I'm not going to start now.

My dogs are both mixed breeds, and mutts are my favorite dogs by far. But "designer" dog breeds make my blood boil. No ethical breeder would ever breed two random dogs together just to make money.

If the puppy you're interested in is in a pet store, comes from a USDA registered breeder, is registered with *any* other all breed registry than the AKC or UKC, is being sold by someone who has more than one litter on the ground at the same time, breeds more than one breed of dog or doesn't allow you to come into their home and see how your puppy is being raised, you're getting suckered.

Buying a puppy from an ethical breeder isn't just about good karma or fancy pedigrees. Puppy mill dogs have a much higher rate of health problems, not to mention incurable separation anxiety and lifelong housebreaking issues. Most of what separates a "good dog" from a bad one takes place within the first six weeks of a puppy's life.

Some breeds of dogs have a wide array of genetic faults. Carefully, thoughtfully cross-breeding those dogs with other, hardier breeds would be a public service to dogs and owners alike. I just don't see that happening often enough.

Thank you, freshwater_pr0n, for saying what I was going to say.

Most of what separates a "good dog" from a bad one takes place within the first six weeks of a puppy's life

I'd amend that to say that most of what separates a good dog from a bad one takes place over years of breeder education, health testing of breeding stock, ideally proving breeding stock in conformation and performance events, careful research into bloodlines, careful care of the pregnant dog and THEN proper puppyraising techniques, not the least of which is never sending a puppy to its new home before the age of 7 weeks at the earliest.

As ROU_Xenophobe said, the dogs in shelters don't come from ethical breeders.

(and I love Pugs, and I am deeply suspicious of anyone who can spend five minutes with a good example of the breed and not be won over - they are some of the most personally endearing dogs on the planet, snorting, eyeball-rolling, "help, I'm choking" bark and all)

Pugs are, among other things, just about the ideal urban apartment dweller's dog.

they are some of the most personally endearing dogs on the planet

Them and French Bulldogs, which are just as adorable in my book. French Bulldogs are the only dogs I know that purr.
