“The name’s Power. Michael Power..."

Whilst the thought of a black James Bond has been bandied around for some time on fan sites,
it is in Africa where this character has finally emerged. Over the past few years Michael Power has been righting wrongs as part of a huge advertising campaign and setting things straight for people across the continent in the movie Critical Assignment. In the absence of Q Division however, Michael must rely on a nice pint of Guinness to provide him with the strength to prevail. Is this a sneaky backdoor way into a new market or is it really the future of moviemaking?

obligatory simpsons quote:
Kids, there's three ways to do things. The right way, the wrong way, and the Max Power way!

oh, wait, you said MICHAEL Power, sorry

Ummm, it's pretty clearly an advertising gimmick. A WILDLY POPULAR one, that seems to have turned into a cultural phenomenon, but I doubt something similar would work as well in, say, New York.

Huh. They tried something similar in Singapore & Malaysia - to me it seemed rather fake and force-fit. (Fade in: daring photojournalist! Seeking danger! Living for adventure! And he drinks Guinness! Product shot; tagline - "You can when you believe." Fade out. That was it for the TV commercial.)

Playing to a more cynical audience, the "Adam King" campaign only managed to raise a few eyebrows, if not a few hackles.

And the ad agency apparently forgot to mind their internet presence. Resulting in confusion all around.

I'm glad the "Michael Power" concept - launched at exactly the same time as the "Adam King" campaign, btw - worked in Africa. But, looking at the Asian version now, how the hell did Guinness ever think that anybody would fall for this pap?

Interesting that the wikipedia article linked is up for deletion. Good to know that the community over there is always on the lookout for Pepsi Blue.

aladfar, anyone can nominate an article for deletion. The consensus is -- at this moment -- unanimous keep. As it should be.

Max Power good. This is probably closer to the Mattel and Mars Bar Quick-Energy Choc-O-Bot Hour tho.
