This is brilliant. "Revelations of a Sex Maniac to the Head of the Criminal Investigation Division" That's one in trend of of 70's Italian movies that had long titles like tabloid headlines, most notably comedies by this director, like: - The Blue Collar Worker and the Hairdresser in a Whirl of Sex and Politics - Summer Night with Greek Profile Almond Eyes and Scent of Basil - A Joke of Destiny Lying in Wait Around the Corner Like a Bandit - The End of the World in Our Usual Bed in a Night Full of Rain - Swept Away by an Unusual Destiny in the Blue Sea of August (yes the one infamously remade by Madonna/Guy Ritchie into one of the most atrocious wastes of film ever)

For years I had a page torn from Sinclair User containing a splendidly lurid ad for Attack of the Mutant Zombie Flesh Eating Chickens From Mars (Starring, I believe, Zappo the Dog). Best video game title ever. It's just a pity it was never released. The would-be author (Matthew Smith) did Jet Set Willy and Manic Miner, which were pretty damn good considering they ran on a Spectrum.

Is it just me, though, or do some of the titles towards the end of that list sorta lack the necessary length? Six words isn't really all that horrible. I mean, "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" has six words, a roman numeral, and a colon. And "Star Wars Episode III: The Revenge of the Sith" has a roman numeral, a colon, and eight words, one of which is a wholly unnecessary "Episode." Come to think of it, Lucas should've just called it "A Wholly Unnecessary Episode" and saved on typesetting.

I was thinking about a possible long film name yesterday while reading the top 50 independent movies thread (but I already said too much over there). What if you combined as many of those titles as you could into one? Like Buffalo '66: Bad Taste Shadows, Blood Simple Swingers, Evil Dead Clerks, Mad Max, Lone Star, Nosferatu, Eraserhead, Donnie Darko, Roger and Me (The Terminator, Being John Malkovich) – Lost in Translation Sideways In the Company of Men, Two-Lane Blacktop Mean Streets, City of God. Something along those lines. It would be an interesting movie.

It's not just you, arto. I found the list severely disappointing. Only the first dozen would produce an immediate "whoa, long title!" reaction if you saw the names outside of this context; another dozen are, yeah, sort of longish if you stop to think about it. After that it's filler. If you find yourself putting Attack of the Killer Tomatoes! on a long-titles list, you should probably realize the idea just didn't pan out and go do something else. Night of the Day of the Dawn of the Son of the Bride of the Return of the Revenge of the Terror of the Attack of the Evil, Mutant, Hellbound, Flesh-Eating Subhumanoid Zombified Living Dead, Part 3, however, is probably postworthy all on its own.
