As a Brit who has lived in the US, I've always had rather a soft spot for Thanksgiving. I'm not sure how it managed to escape becoming an orgy of consumerism, but somehow it has. Kind of how Christmas ought to be. Cheers.

I'm not sure how it managed to escape becoming an orgy of consumerism I'm not sure that's a good thing. At least at Christmas you get cool stuff to offset the veritable misery of spending a rare day off with family you neither know very well nor particularly like.

At my house, we always waited for someone to knock over a drink on the crowded table and then said, sometimes in unison, "NOW it's Thanksgiving!" Was that only us? spilling isn't even on the bingo card.

How about 'Someone suggests ordering pizza'. The bird wasn't thawed out in time so hours after everyone arrives the cook sings out "dinner's taking a little longer than I thought" and everyone starves for 2 hours longer getting crankier and meaner by the moment

Here are a few they left out: Child fills up on candy sitting out in the living room, takes one bite of turkey leg and announces he is full. Guests discuss the food they are eating now, the food they had last year, which pies they have "dibs" on, which food they plan to eat for a snack. Parents pressure grown children to commit to elaborate Christmas plans including: Xmas party, Xmas parade, Xmas church program, Xmas eve, Xmas day.
