OK, giving the Nazi salute to Santa Claus (pronounced not like claws but like Claus Kinski's Claus) was pretty good, but the Chapelle bit was funnier and neither is all that great. Does anyone have something else that might convince me she's very funny. Maybe she's good in stand-up? Or she writes great jokes for other people?

Sara Silverman is mostly funny because she's so crude. I gather she wasn't very crude in this video (havn't bothered to click it) which would explain why it wasn't so funny.

Meh.

Rules in life:
Funny girls are hot.

True, but unfortunately hot girls are not necessarily funny. I hadn't really seen Sarah Silverman until this thread, so I looked up some clips of her act and...meh. All her comedy is based on the fact that while looking innocent she says things that are crude, or vaguely offensive. The first time she did this, I snickered. The second, I smiled. The third, I just wished the clip would be over soon. Once you get past the surprise that she says the stuff she says, there really isn't very much comedy in her comedy, and rather than being offended, I found myself vaguely embarassed on her behalf for the act not being funnier.

Honestly, I really wasn't that offended. Reason being, paradoxically, that it was clear that she was just trying to be offensive. Somewhat in the way that people who try too hard to be cool generally aren't, her attempts at trying to leverage offense into humor just seemed dull instead.

The New Yorker just did a decent write-up (including behind-the-scenes at the taping of the Chappelle's Show bit).

Personally, I find her work much more conceptual than per se "funny". She isn't quite a female Andy Kaufman -- just saying this probably offends Kaufman acolytes -- but her act is more in his space than traditional stand-up, even if she hews closer to stand-up conventions in presenting it. Her artistic courage in using her own persona is remarkable.

As an able-bodied, atheist, upper-class, white male I fully support Sarah Silverman as none of her "ironic" humor will ever have to play off of my hidden hurt, insecurities or social marginalization.

Well, maybe the atheist part for social marginalization, but it's still much easier to make fun of Christians, because they walk around with semi-sepressed shame about their conformist superstitions. Seriously, can you imagine someone getting successfully riffed for not believing in Noah's Ark? Viscerally, the religious recognize their vulnerability, which is why prejudice against atheists - ironic or otherwise - could never be successfully marketed into comedy.
posted by dgaicun at 2:07 PM on December 10, 2005

I just watched a few clips of her on ifilm.com, and... okay, where's the funny part? She doesn't even have shock value - the things she says are more ordinary than anything else. Certainly not offensive by any standard I can imagine. She strikes me as assuming she's crossed some imaginary line of offensiveness (talking about the holocaust! Saying nigger! She said something was gay!), and standing back and waiting for a reaction. I can't speak for anyone else (and obviously, lots of people find this hilarious), but I was waiting, too, until I realised that was all there was.

If she wants shock value, she needs to be a million times less tame. If she wants to be legitimately funny, she needs to write some material.

Why must so many people thing its cool to be offensive?! How about not trying to offend as a virtue.

Generally, humor is funny because it describes something that's inappropriate and/or unexpected, and thus makes you laugh.

From the perspective of being neither Jewish nor a girl, I thought it was funny the first time I heard the chorus. The second time, it's no longer unexpected, but still amusing. Then, after hearing "Jew girl" repeated over and over again, I start to feel uncomfortable. In short-- it was a punchline stretched out to song-length.

Why must so many people thing its cool to be offensive?!

It's a child/parent growing-up thing. Kids love to gross out their parents. Teens revel in anything that denies their childishness and affirms their adultness. The first time a kid thinks 'hey Santa Clause must have a penis' it's like a revelation for them. It's cool to be 'in the know', grown up, wise in the ways of the world. So, take any cultural icon, any famous person, anyone in a position of authority, refer to their sexuality - and you're smart, hip, cool. This stuff lasts well into adulthood and then usually becomes less cool when you have children of your own.

I'd never even heard of Sarah Silverman until a week or so ago when she featured on a UK screening of Celebrity Poker Showdown.

It was her all-in hand, and she was beaten. She leapt onto the table to stop the dealer from putting down the river card, but he dealt it onto her back, and then she was out.

Afterwards, in the Losers Lounge, the host who isn't Phil Gordon was replaying the hand, and said something about 'and there you were, finished, with a river running down the small of your back' and without missing a beat she comes back , 'yeah, if I only had a nickel...'

Perhaps some people might find that offensive as well, but from that moment on I was utterly besotted.

That Slate article was an intellectual exercize in assuming that if something is presented as comedy and you don't get it, you just aren't up to the "conceptual" level of it. Performance art? Yeah, she's a real Karen Finley.
Hey, maybe the National Socialists who marched in Toledo aren't really racists, but meta-meta-racists who are only doing performance art to show us how America still hasn't come to terms with discussions on race! Maybe they're an intentional parody! Maybe the riots were simply the subaltern realizing their power position and embracing the theatrical role in a text of violence!
Maybe Sarah Silverman's fans are rebuking her with meta-laughter, where they laugh at the idea of people laughing at her meta-meta-meta-meta-humor!
Maybe my dismissal of her hackneyed schtick is a meta-dismissal that shows how with-it I am by refusing to pander to her clumsy bullshit (see, I know, because of Slate, that dismissing means "not being ready" for her humor, and yet I've enjoyed things that were more outre, so obviously my dismissal is a commentary on those who don't get it, by which I assume— Jean Genet-style— the position of the authority who condemns!)

I've been a fan of Ms. Silverman's since about 1997 when she played Wendy the comedy writer on "The Larry Sanders Show." I agree that there is something Kaufman-esque (particularly the woman-goading chauvinist stuff attendant to Andy's intergender wrestling bits) about Sarah's schtick- it's there in the way that she identifies herself by her own name and then says things that she doesn't/couldn't actually agree with. Albert Brooks does this too: it's the stand-up equivalent of an 'unreliable narrator' in postmodern fiction and it's purposely confusing in its attempt to stimulate reaction. It's also a calculated potential sacrifice of 'respect' on the part of the comedian who employs it. Part of the problem here seems to be that Sarah's stuff was clearly not conceived to appeal to capital E-Everyone but (seemingly due to her perceived 'hotness') it is suddenly being marketed to Everyone anyway. People seem to believe that Sarah is either a)sincerely racist or b)just trying to be shocking for it's own sake. Personally, my interpretation would opt for a far more amibiguous and provocative c). PS: If you were to read a little further down in that "awful" Onion interview, Sarah very sincerely apologizes for and explains her earlier outbursts. PPS: The only people who consider "Jew" a pejorative are gentiles who grew up using it as a verb meaning 'to rip off'. To Jews, it's just what they are. The song repeats the word 'cause it's in the chorus and choruses repeat, not to rub your face in some punchline.
