Yet another Google Maps hack for the NYC subway system. This one helps you plan your trip from point A to point B, and gives you an estimated travel time. Most locals will quickly find that the routes it suggests usually aren't the optimum, however this may be useful for visitors, at least until Friday morning. In the event of a strike, this is your best bet for some form of direction.

Very cool. Looks like it has a few quirks, especially if some amount of backtracking is necessary to catch the closest cross-town train (and I wish it knew the bus routes too!) but very useful nonetheless.

Apparently DC does have a similar tool. Didn't play with it, but I hope it can help you. Next time I'll try to be a little less NYC-centric in my post.

Seems to have some problems... I ran it along the M just for kicks, and apparently I can get from 36th St in Brooklyn to the Financial District in five and a half minutes. In reality, that trip would probably be at bare minimum 25 minutes. But I'll cut it a break, because who takes the M, anyway?

Very cool, but it's true that the routes and times are less than accurate. I asked it how I should go about the Southern Queens to Midtown Manhattan commute for my last job. It gave me the obvious route but not the best. And as far as the timing goes, it claimed the trip would take 1h12m, including a 45 minute walk to the subway station. That trip used to take me 1h45m when I got driven to the subway.

I like it. I also enjoy the squib on the NYC website that uses the word "illegal" whenever referring to the possible strike.

THe NYC fare is $2.00, not $1.50, a la carte. I'd like to see a Governor go PATCO on the MTA workers if they strike. in any case, use this Google hack to navigate to the Mefi Meetup I will organize in my 'hood shortly....!

Not to poo-poo the hack, but this will soon become obsolete. Google already does this via google transit for portland while "google transit" sits in Beta. Over time, they'll surely be adding more and more cities and I'd be willing to bet that New York, Chicago et al will be added by someone. I like Chicago's trip planner, but it can be irritating sometimes...

This thing thinks it takes 14 minutes to walk from 9th avenue to 7th avenue in the 50s. Even tourists go faster than that.
