Hm -- third post this week that reminds me of my smoking years. This was one of the pleasures of smoking cigarettes -- watching the beautiful, intricate patterns of smoke rising on a still night. It's been fun reminiscing, but I'm still glad I don't do it anymore.

I agree, very cool. I especially like the fact that he explains how his portfolio shots were done. Not all were what I was expecting. I thought most would be "Well, I took these two stock images and using Photoshop..." Not so, most shots seem to involve a stupendous amount of effort. The "bottle fueling the airplane" was involved a real airplane with lighting by the airport fire crew. The traffic pattern shot was actually an HO scale model. Neat. I don't understand the "put your mouse here and wait" navigation though.

I have no problem with sites built entirely in flash, but can some designer explain to me why "conveyor belt" galleries are considered a good idea? Seriously, I don't get either the utility or the aesthetic. The pictures are marvelous.

I agree with the sentiments of others. Wonderful shots. I especially enjoyed the ones based on mythology or history. It's a pity you have to put up with poor Flash-based navigation to get to them. The sliding bit is especially irksome.

The sliding bit is especially irksome. Yeah, I too was initially put off by this, but I realized it's particularly apt for this content (the smoke, that is). So I'll give him a free pass this time, cause those pics really are quite pretty.

When I'm ready to go "back", my mouse is already headed towards my browser's back button. Having to stop, and then move my mouse back ACROSS the page to click his back link, was just annoying. It'd be a little bit better if his back button was in the top left corner instead of right corner, which is obviously the opposite of most (all?) browsers. Oh well. Awesome pictures anyway.

TERRIBLE interface. The smoke pictures are kind of cool, but I'm suspicious of photography which requires almost no artistic input from the photographer. To compound that point, his other galleries, where it's entirely his input, are startlingly bad.
